Hey people,

I'm currently considering buying a Scion TC and have never purchased a vehicle before. I've been with friends but for the most part, if it appears that there are no males with you, the reps seems to talk down to you... just my own observation. Anyways, I was researching online and read that most dealerships are satisfied if they earn anywhere from 3-5% of the invoice price, so I probably want to offer 4% at most.

I also read up on other things such as the fact that when reps give you quotes for vehicles, the invoice price they list is not their actual invoice price, but a inflated invoice price in order to make the buyer feel as if they are getting a better deal than they really are. I also heard the best time to buy a car is between model years when dealerships are trying to rid their place of last year's models, and are given incentives and factory hold backs by car makers to sell cars. During this time, dealerships earn back a percentage of the invoice price they paid so they earn more profit. My thing is, I have this concern that despite the little bit f knowledge I have, that I won't be to do so well in the negotiation process. I'm well prepared to get up and leave if they reject my offer, but what is an acceptable amount to offer in the beginning in order to start negotiations.e

Say I wanted to get.. a 2008 Spec Auto Scion TC, invoice price: $15,295 and msrp is $16,100. I don't know what the additional stuff is yet, so I'll estimate at another $1,000 for mats or whatever.

So if I was to assume that the invoice price listed is inflated and no one pays msrp... what would be a good number to start with? Sorry if I sound confusing, I'm not very good with car talk. sweatingbullets.gif

Thanks for any help you're able to give me.

If it's new, you can't haggle on the price of any Scion. The price you see is the price you will have to pay. Scion is "Pure Pricing" so they are straight forward, if you don't like the price then don't buy it.

I find it convenient, saves a lot of time.

Pure pricing heh yep yep.. I tried to get a new scion too but the best quote I was able to get from internet pricing OTD was $19300 bare bones model. No thx.

ps: This was for an '09 model. I did a search on Edmunds.com and found out that ppl are paying around $16,720 for an '08 model. This price is of course, without taxes and fees.

-do your research online (kbb, edmunds, cars, autotrader etc.) to see how much your car would cost with the options you want.
-google for a car forum ex. scion tc forums and see how much people paid for their cars around your area.
-email the dealers you are close to and see how much they will give you the car for with all the options and OTD pricing.
-compare each dealers pricing with others and see if any dealer can beat each others etc.
-once you have the price you want, call the internet sales manager or w/e and schedule an appointment and make sure the price they are willing to sell the car for is OTD (tax, title, licensing, misc fees etc. included)
- if they give you the run around or tell you different price for the car, walk away from the store, you have to obligations to buy from the dealer you go into.
- don't be a jerk to the salesman, everything will go a lot smoother
- make sure you test drive the car you want to make sure it's what you want
-READ ALL DOCUMENTS EVEN THE FINE PRINT. if you have to ask if you can take the papers home to read over.
- don't sign the delivery papers until you have completely gone over the car, inside and out, to make sure everything is there and working and there are so scratches or paint chips etc. on the exterior/interior
- be patient.

Car buying could be really time consuming. My dad and I visited 4 dealers before we finally signed the papers, and it took us +8 hrs to negotiate and settle on a price both of us liked and got free oil changes for life! wink.gif Just bring a folder with print outs from the websites I mentioned above and let them know what you are willing to pay then and there. If you have a trade-in, don't mention until after you have settled on a price. It can be fun, the dealership we bought our Odyssey from was very generous and the salesman was willing to work with us and even made phone calls to banks etc to see what the lowest interest rate we could get and allowed us to choose unlike the first honda dealer which said we can only finance through honda.

So just be patient, unless you really need the car asap. good luck.

Thanks for the tips, I actually did visit those sites you mentioned before. I think I have a better idea of things now and am starting to discuss this stuff with my friends who work at car dealerships. Thanks again.
