I plan on majoring in Korean at UCLA, but heard rumors that the program is in danger due to budget cuts.

I can't start school until next year (I'm establishing residency right now), but was planning on going to SMC for two years and then transferring to UCLA. Now I'm worried that by the time I am ready to transfer, UCLA will no longer be offering a Korean major. Are my fears unfounded, or should I start making alternative plans?

Also, for anyone who is majoring in a foreign language or knows someone who is: what kind of work is available for those majors? I plan on teaching English in Korea after getting my degree, but I don't know if I want to be a teacher for the rest of my life.

Thanks.

Well, unfortunately I don't know anything about the Korean department in UCLA since I don't go there but, I did find some links you can look at which answers your question about careers using foreign language as a degree.

http://www.vistawide.com/careers/language_jobs.htm
http://www.vistawide.com/careers/language_major.htm
http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/Mforeign.html

Looking at the list it seems like a lot of work in communication and I guess education. But, personally think you should purse a double degree or something to fall back on. Just having a foreign language as major doesn't sound very secure to me. I would look into Liberal Studies so after you teach in Korea you could teach in the U.S as high school teacher you could teach in university or community college. That's just my suggestion, but honestly I don't know too much lol.

I wouldn't do a language major to be honest.

Take something else as your major, and do Korean as a minor. Your job market with a language major is very limited, and can drastically be destroyed if relations between the country and US weaken.

I really dont see that happening, but double majoring is a good idea for the areas he's looking at. Maybe business and korean or korean culture?

If you plan on teaching, you can always work part time at a CC and get a masters to get a full time job there, then see if you want to move on to university level teaching.

yeah, it is.you could try looking up the group on facebook. it's called "save korean studies at ucla" they should have all the info you're looking for on there. i got a facebook message recently regarding that actually. hope it helps.

Hello everyone!

Thank you all so much for all the support and time you have given to the movement! We deeply appreciate your participation and interest!
We are writing to inform you on the current position of the Korean program and also to sincerely ask you to help us again with a few minutes of your time.

UPDATES
Fortunately, the funding from the Academy of Korean Studies and the school will temporarily help fill the literature position for the coming quarters. The new chair of the department is also currently trying to negotiate with the deans to get a literature hire as a first priority.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
It is extremely crucial to demonstrate STUDENTS' positions to the administration at this time. The petitions you have signed will be mailed to the deans in a few days. Now, we are launching the MASS E-MAIL CAMPAIGN (see the form below). Please partake in this movement to show your personal concerns as a student! The decisions are to be made in August. One e-mail can make all the difference!!
A pre-formatted version is available for your convenience. We also encourage you to personalize the e-mail if you'd like to voice a more particular concern.
