Has anyone applied with a less popular major in order to get into a better school? And then, of course, eventually changing majors?
For example, East Asian studies (no offense) or undecided or general studies and then changing to architecture or biochem?
I believe you can change it the day of orientation? I'd like to change it BEFORE taking classes in the major I wrote down when I applied, so that I wouldn't be wasting time.
Kind of manipulating the system. Haha. sweatingbullets.gif
I'm just afraid I won't be able to change it and then I'm screwed. So did you guys get away with it?
I'm pretty sure it depends on the school so please be detailed with your story. Haha.
I was going to put this in the pre-college thread, but I think some people here may have done it before.
Move it if it's best.
Thanks!

I had a buddy who applied for a Forestry major at UC Berkley with the intentions of getting in and switching to computer science. Of course, after research on how difficult it was to switch majors from one department to another he decided not to go for it.

well, i know someone who did that to get into the school i go to, and now she is changing it, and in order to change, she has to pass all the core classes for that new major with at least a b- and she says that it's super hard.

Luckily for me, i didn't do that and i was accepted easily into my school.

I hear about people who successfully get away with this, and was myself tempted to do it, but was too much of a wuss to actually do it ><

My English III AP teacher junior year told us that it has worked, but one of her friends tried to do it when she was in college...but it didn't quite work out as she had hoped ><
She said that her friend really wanted to get into this one college and chose an arcane major...like somethingsomethingbotony or whatever, and was planning to change it once she got in. Unfortunately, however, she couldn't change it due to all a series of problems (red tape, classes full, ETC), and so she had to stick to the random major she had no interest in for an entire year. She was able to change it Soph year, but wasted her entire first year.

that's actually what happened to me, but i didnt realize it until after i decided not to go. the reason i didnt go was because i thought it would've been hard to switch out of my major if i decided to change my mind, and i didnt want to be stuck in that major if it didnt turn out to be what i wanted to study. i have mixed feelings about that now but at the same time, i think my decision not to go was better financially (the school i got into was NYU which is expensive as shat despite the scholarships and fin aid they gave me).

um not sure if that really helped lol. i think it really depends on the school you're applying to. in my case, i realize that it would've been hard but not impossible for me to switch schools within the NYU system. i got into the nursing school and i would've switched into college of arts & sciences but if i had wanted to switch into stern school of business, it would've probably been impossible. it all depends on the rep of the school you want to get into. you should really check the school's website to see if they specifically say that they do/dont take transfers, even within the college, or ask current students who are in the major you're looking at. i doubt being undecided will help in your acceptance, but if you're looking for tricks, try something considered unconventional like education if you're a male or engineering if you're a female. of course, they might ask you why you want to study what you chose... just remember that there'll probably be another smaller application process if you're switching majors no matter what, im pretty sure.
