here's the problem.

its going to be me and my bf's 1year and 3 months together. So i thought i should
make him a bento, because i think it looks good.

the problem is: I don't even know how to make one!!

i mean i can't make it pretty like those other bentos i be seeing.

i ask him what he wants in it, but the only answer i got from him was "food is food, i'll eat anything that you make."
that's nice, but i have no idea what to put in it.

but i thought of some things to put in it (list below)

  • pork fry rice
  • eggroll
  • rice steam roll
  • fry shrimp
  • some mix fruit

and that's it. you think it's good enough??
not the best like other bentos, but you think it'll be good?

ADVICE SOMEONE?? HELP?!!

thanks!

What ethnicity is he? o: That way you can narrow it down to the type of food to make. (:
1) It's not good to put so much fried stuff inside it! xD;
2) I think this is how the portion controls go: 3 parts rice (or whatever?), 2 parts vegetables, 1 part fruit. And then dessert... I might be wrong, though.
3) Bento are supposed to last for long hours, so be careful to cook foods that taste good hot and cold. (:

Maybe cook an omelet and roll it up with chicken fried rice inside it-- I think it's called omuraisu. Put some pieces of shredded chicken and sliced carrots next to it, maybe? Or substitute the chicken with steamed roll. Add some strawberries (sexy fruit (;) or whatever fruit, lol. Then maybe add a chocopie or something~
Sorry if this doesn't help~ There are many bento recipes online that you can look at. Cooking Cute has nice bento ideas as well as recipes and ways to prepare it. Good luck with your boyfriend, by the way. <3

If you want to make something extra cute, just cut out some shapes out of a fruit or vegetable and position it as a focal point. Bell peppers are pretty good for this. Staples are a key point in the bento. Add a cute desert, too! Like some kind of Asian candy or treat

rice, kimchee, egg and watermelon on the side for dessert :]

make an egg like a round face place it on the rice (make it round shape) and put kimchee like eyes, nose, and mouth.

:]

i would put things that would reheat well...
as far as i know eggrolls aren't very good reheated...at least not the fried kind.

the fried rice might be good...i would even go as far as wrapping it in an omelet and putting some cute heart shaped ham cut out on top or something...secure with toothpick...this way the rice is kept neatly inside the omelet...

i love making bentos for my boyfriend biggrin.gif
and it helps that he likes eating them and looks happy when i do it for him ^^
so far, his favourite one consists of:

-boiled rice with furikake and shredded (seasoned) seaweed
-crispy fried chicken
-tamagoyaki (japanese sweet fried egg -the rolled up one)
-cherry tomatoes, shredded carrot and diced prunes with a honey-lemon dressing (pack the dressing seperately and pour it onto the "salad" only before eating so it doesn't get soggy.)
-grapes (his favourite fruit) and diced apples in green tea jelly

hope that gave you some encouragement/inspiration or smth. haha.
dunno if whatever i said helps at all but i hope it was of some use. (:

thanks so much for the adivice.
i'll try my hardest and try everything.
but im not so sure about kimche.
i mean it's good, but we both don't really like the
sourness with sweetness too.
plus WE ARE BOTH HMONG,
so it's weird iif i put kimche in it.
hahaha...not trying to be korean or anything
no affence to anyone or anything...hahaha...
but thanks so much! i hope he enjoys it!

thanks.
