SAT Questions

I have a few questions regarding the SAT. I posted this like the night before Soompi went down so I don't know if I got any replies.
1. What is considered a 'good' score? Someone posted about getting around 1700, and some of you said it was bad. I would be happy with a 1700... especially if it was my first time.
2. How much can you raise your score by? I took a practice test and got a pretty low score, because on the test day, I was feeling reallyy sick, and it took like 2.5 hours to get a break. Is raising it by 700 points pushing it? That's how much I want to raise it by, and my SAT prep teacher (who I don't think knows much about the SAT) said if I got a couple more right on each section, my score would go up by a couple hundred points. I don't know how accurate that is though.
3. I'm going to hakwon for SAT class (Princeton Review course), SAT prep course at school, and studying on my own time at home. I'm also taking the PSAT next week. I know this probably sufficient, but is there anything else I can do? I'm like freaking out about my score so I really want to do well.

1) well, what is considered a "good score" varies on the person and what college that person wants to go to, but i can say that the average score on the new sat is about 1545-1600. Somewhere around that area. now, if you were shooting for those ivy league schools, you should at least aim for a 2100 or so.
2) again, this depends on the person, too. i mean, 700 points is A LOT, but i don't want to say it's impossible. how long do you have to raise your points? if you're a junior right now and you plan to take the SATs again in your senior year, then i say that you have a chance, especially with how rigorously you're preparing yourself. oh, and just on a side note, the SATs they give out in october are generally easier than the other SATs because collegeboard makes it taking into consideration that it is mostly seniors who are taking it for the LAST TIME.
3) i'd say that you're doing all you can right now. just keep up the good work. and remember, SATs are not everything. GPA, extra curricular, etc. all count as well for college. and in order to really conquer the sat, i think that it's important to just relax and get enough practice. you're on the right track =)

A 'good' score is at least 2000 I guess. >.>; Depends on what school you want to apply to and what your own standards are.

Everyone has different standards. Some people want a higher score, while others are satisfied with a lower one.
I personally would be ecstatic with a 2100. Actually, now that I think about it, I won't be satisfied with even a 2090. I'm just mad at myself because I just started studying/practicing one day ago. I took a total of three practice tests (2020, 2060, 2080 in that order) from the Blue CollegeBoard book (with 8 real tests) and I'm surprised I scored this high. The thing is I didn't study in over half a year so I'm thinking how if I had studied, I would receive a higher score?
I don't know...
You're taking PSATs so you're a junior? Just some advice for you: don't wait until senior year to take your SATs for the first time!!! I'm in that boat and I regret it. If I don't break 2100 this time, I'm going to get that 2100 in December.
Oh yeah, many Asians seem to have trouble with thE CR section. One way to improve this is by READING!!!!! SO READ READ READ! Reading classics (Call of the Wild, The Scarlet Letter, Frankenstein, The Time Machine, etc etc) will help you a lot.
Good luck!
Wait, I need it more -- I HAVE ONE DAY!!!!!!!

1. The average score on the new SAT is 1500, which is.. surprising (to me). A 'good' score, to you, depends on how well your GPA is and what colleges you're targetting. Like if you have a lower GPA, you definitely need to compensate it with a higher SAT score. And colleges.. hm. It depends on how much your college will base your admission from your SATs too.
2. Depends on the person. I've read that usually after 2-3 times taking the SAT, your score will not change that much and you're pretty much set with the range you'll keep on getting.
3. Yes, read TIME magazine or the news to get a more variety of ideas, like whenever you have free time. This can help support whatever prompt you get on the writing section. History & literature are better examples than personal experience
But you should be fine. Stick to your schedule.

...errr,
improving your overall SAT score by 700 is almost impossible. Unless, if there were circumstances you endured the first time.
Most changes are only around 20-50 points.

1. I consider 1700-1900 decent, 1900-2000 good, 2100+ very good
2. You could raise it by however much you are capable of. I remember I started studying/practicing for SATs during my summer of freshman year. That was when the 1600 scale was still in use.. I used to score like 1000 and I was so embarassed, lol. But now I am a junior and my score is ok, I think. It went up at least 400 points? But that is after about two years.
3. I do not recommend Princeton review but it is better than Kaplan so props for that. Afterall a course is only good if you make the best out of it, right? So study hard - practice every night, devote 1 hour at least to reviewing vocab etc. I dont know what grade you are in but taking the PSATs is always good. I am taking it too. I hope we both do well! ^^

1. I consider 2200+ as good. But that's just because I have high expectations (which really sucks at times..)
2. I'd say, you (or anyone, for that matter) can raise your score to 2370. The last 30 something point is hard to grab.
3. practice. All the courses are to get you to practice.
PSAT next week

it's so hard to practice CR though..
just sit there and read and not improve gets frustrating
1500 is average, but I'd say about 2000 would be good enough for me.
700 points is a lot, unless last time, you didnt try really hard the last time
Does practice make perfect???!! lol
