[color="#808080"][font="Arial"]Alright. It's going to be my niece's first birthday this Saturday and I can't seem find a present. So I decided to just make her a cake. Yes, I know. She can't eat it, but whatever. tongue.gif I'm thinking I'll make a 2 layer simple sponge cake with strawberry spread in the middle.
Should I make her a nice and pretty fondant decorated cake, or a simple buttercream frosted cake?
And no. I have never in my life worked with fondant before. ---Help please?

*edit - Can you guys give some suggestions on how I should decorate the cake?
--much appreciation smile.gif

*another edit - Mmkay. I've decided to make a buttercream frosted cake because I probably won't have enough patience to learn how to work correctly with fondant. I'll take pictures and post them after I actually make it.
Thanks for the advice though biggrin.gif

Go with buttercream ! Fondant can be very difficult, or so I'm told.

Buttercream is yummy and fluffy and easy and perfect for a first birthday.
( especially if the baby gets to stuff her face with cake too, but that's not the case. )

You can still make the cake very pretty with piped icing.
If you have your heart set on fondant, go for it. (: It just might take some patience.

well, I would use fondant, because you can make so many cute things with it <3. Or you can get small pastic figures and decorate with it on top (stabilize it with whipped cream or something), and she can keep it. It'll be a very cute memory :].

Well..Fondant isn't very good tasting wise..
But you should look at Samarie's work here if you're looking for cake ideas. And there's a great fondant recipe and tutorial!

^yes i agree.. but if done right, it will look really nice smile.gif
i suggest you practice before doing the cake, for first timers fondants can often screw the cake up o.o which happened to me, LOL.

also buttercream tastes better xD
