11. well, 5 are actual applications and the rest are just random folders and files i downloaded that i'm too lazy to clean up.

Zero! I hate having any on my desktop as it makes it look cluttered 
I just use a dock for essential shortcuts but I mainly use a shortcut command key program like lauchy to start programs. Its so much quicker!
