From what I've seen and been through myself, I know university and college is not for everyone. However, everyone seems to pick one or the other, college being the latter choice. There are a lot of other things you can do for a living and make just as much and live just as happy, so why did you choose to seek a post secondary education? Are you fulfilling your parents' wishes? Are you doing it because every other one else is? Maybe, society convinced you that you cannot succeed without a 'proper' education? Whichever reason it may be and unless you've found a program that you actually enjoy and would not change for the world, you're probably in it for the wrong reasons.

Most asians I know are in life sciences. Are all of them becoming doctors no or pursuing something in the medical field? No. In fact, I'd say 60% of them have already switched programs or are contemplating it. The reason being is they didn't actually take the time to consider what is actually right for them and just lept blindly, like a lemming, into the program that everyone else is went into. lets narrow it down:

If you didn't go into life sciences, you most likely went into engineering, and if you didn't go into engineering you most likely went into business.

Of course there are a bunch of people who actually went into university and into a program against their parents wishes. For the most part however, a lot of people went into university without thinking. I know I did. So why'd you go to university/college?

*by the way, I'm in the military now and am doing just as well as any university/college grad would be doing. I'd say even better, since I'm making just as much as they will be making once they graduate and the same as them when they've been in their profession for a couple of years.*

I gain more knowledge.
It will be easier for me to get a job with a degree compared to a person w/o one.
Better pay.
College experience.

Yes you can succeed without a 4 year degree. But it's that much harder to succeed w/o one.

Because I didn't know what else to do. My parents didn't really care what field I went into, as long as I was in school.

True, my parents wanted me to go to college...but that's not the reason why I went. I wanted to go to college because of my own personal dream to pursue a career. I didn't know what exactly I wanted to do, so College was just the logical answer at the time......and I don't regret going to college. It was a lot of fun, I learned a lot of things inside and outside of class. LOL. I finished with a business degree, but my parents seriously did NOT want me to do that. Sigh. I really enjoyed college......and I miss it already. TT_TT

high school doesn't really help you find who you are. To find out more about this world and yourself students tend to discover what is avaliable and find what is right for them in college.

As previous stated, because I had no idea what to do after high school. All I know is that I did not want to enter the workplace yet, too young I guess. College gives you time to think about what you want and the experience in college teaches you so much in knowledge and social life. I would not be without it. College is a phase in life where you are stuck between what it's like to be a child and a fully adult person. College gives you tools and knowledge to make it in the workforce, it may not give you everything but at least a foundation to build on. And it is actually easier to get a good job if you have a degree than if you don't. The world is a cruel place, you got too have a steppingstone to stand on.

i chose university because I figured it would open up to me the most amount of opportunities to be qualified to go into whatever I wanted to afterwards. And I think it has.

You can't do much without an undergraduate education these days, unless you get really lucky.

Well, the Art department at the local university needed Rubenesque models for some of their classes, so I came in with wig in tow.

well i went to college because thats what ur supposed to do after hs. or thats the whole idea anyway. everyone didnt even consider NOT going. its like not an option. it was always accepted by my parents that i would go and i never questioned it. and thats how it went. though i jumped in with absolutely no clue about what the heck i was even doing there. i know how asian parents are: must go into sciences or medical or engineering or suffer the consquences of being unsuccessful and poor. however my parents were somewhat disappointed when i ended up choosing a social science degree instead. HA. teach them to give me options. tongue.gif

I have no idea why I went to high school and I have no idea why I went to college. Neither have helped me. It's all useless unless you have a plan and if you do have a plan, maybe it can still be useless.

Yes you will make the same as college grads for some time, but then their incomes will generally make big leaps, and have no real stopping point, whereas a military income will generally stay the same, unless your a civilian working in/for the military/govt., in which case your income will still hit a final plateu eventually.

So in other words, you goto college, you have a chance at getting a job where your income possibilities are endless and you are not tied down to a government entity, whereas with the military, you get different fixed incomes that are garunteed, and yet your income possibilities in the military/govt. are limited, as well as the fact that you are now theirs for as long as the contract they had you sign says you are.

I think a lot of us get this impression that we go to university/certain program under our parents wishes, but as you grow older, almost half of us find out that we just ASSUMED that's what our parents want. My friend has been in life science for 2 years, and she just assumed that's what her parents want for her, when in reality they didn't really think it's the right program for her. I've always assumed that my parents want me to be in some "sophisticated"program like law, business, and I ended up in business, but last time I have a talk with my mom, she actually wanted a simple life for me and wanted me to become some social worker.

but know what? I don't regret going to school. I learn so much, not only about the world, people, but also about myself. And you are stereotyping a lot of the programs. Business for example, in my opinion, is the most flexible studying area. it is a skill, and can be applied to anything. You'll be surprised how much you can achieve with a little knowledge about finance and people.

it's true most university programs are BORING, but it doesn't necessarily it's useless. obviously it's not for everyone and the only way to life. but for majority of the people, it is a good path towards a comfortable life.

I think the thread starter lives in a country where you can make decent money without college (at least enough to support yourself), but that's impossible where I am, unless you're an actor or something. Part of the reason I wanted to go to college was not only the degree that I'd need to get myself a decent job (and it's a must if you hope to enter a well-paid workplace), but I also wanted to get out of my house and meet some people who hadn't known me or my parents since birth. And college does change people, in so many ways- I wanted the experience, just to try and figure out a little bit of who I was. And it did help (I'm still there).

I went cuz its part and parcel of the machine.

If you aren't born into money, unless you have a solid plan (as mentioned earlier) you'll probably never make it out of whatever economic class you're born into.

So... just go to work, do the 9-5... try to find happiness and pass onto the next realm.

I went to University/College to please my parents, belief that being educated is prestigious, belief that being educated will assist in my career, which in turn will help provide for me and my family in the future.

I haven't regretted it yet, but I feel like I'm behind and should have worked harder to climb that ladder faster.
