Topic title/description basically describes it all... brand new computer (Vista), I checked the settings millions of times and I even changed my password... I can't figure out why it's not asking me for a password? I've closed the laptop cover, manually put it on sleep and hibernate (and left my computer there for over 2 hours)... etc. etc. Not working...

Its the power mode you're on.
You can set it to be different for each power mode like power saver, etc needs to have require password on wakeup
Yes its possible a program is changing the setting, but most likely your power plan just doesnt have it enabled.
