I read on here a lot about how many people dont really know what they want to do for their career or future. A lot of people have majors that they dont really know what to do with. Well, I am going into my senior as a Pysch major and have decided that this is just not for me at all,(Yeah im a little late).
So My question is how did you know or figure out what you wanted to be?? This question is for anybody, but is there anyone on soompi that just KNOWS what they want to be?? and how did you figure it out?? Like any monumental moment that changed your course in history? or just something you've always thought about being? Are there any tips on how to become more decisive about my future?? Thanks

It's ur senior year, but its not completely hopeless. Can u do add another major... and do double majors. I'm sure that'll keep u in school longer but thats better than doing something u dont like right? Anyways, if u have a BA in psyc ur probably gonna have a hard time finding a job. Most of the undergrads in psyc plan to get their phd to become a psychologist. So maybe u can use ur undergrad and go to grad school, and do something u like.

Anyways, when I go back on Sept 24th, I will be a sophmore. I have switched majors about 4 times and thought about switching about 20 lol. But now I am sure, I want to go into fashion design. U could say I've always knew. When I was little, I loved everything about clothes and still do. My moms a seamstress and I've always watched her sew and do other things. Plus fashion is so exciting, competitive and [after deep thought] I'm willing to go for it. I'm lucky enough to have everyone around me support me =) && u should sit down and think about what do u enjoy doing and all that. There are also personality quizes and analysis to help u figure urself out.

All your ideas are good, and I have resigned myself to the fact that Iwill be in school longer (maybe, much longer dry.gif ) Wow thats soo cool that your moms a seamdtress, I guess you were destined to be in fashion. Fashion is really compeitive but anything is these days (maybe not working at Mcd). I think if your passionate about what your doing, you'll be great. I guess I just have tofind what Im passionate about. I think I'' take a couple of quizzes!

In my last years of high school I took few history courses. I did extremely well and saw how much time I put on those classes while neglecting the others. But they were Western History and I never really had taking classes on Asian History. But when it was time to apply to university, I thought about what to major in, so I looked at my grades and my interests. I discovered that my best grades would always be history related. The I looked at my bookshelves, I saw that all my novels where historical fiction set in China or Japan or Korea. I was even taking sunday korean classes with korean kids. For me it was all natural and had only thought it was a passion. But after have given it a deep thought I discover that it was probably what I wanted to do. Now I am in my second year in East Asian Studies/ History and im loving it like it's not possible!!! I literally become excited when I enter class haha I have no doubt I wanna pursue into the academia in Korean Studies ^^

Everything was already in front of my eyes, all I had to do was to think hard about it. But sometimes unless if our interest does not have an academic title, it is really hard to really know what we really want to do. Our society "require" us to have a university degree but the different faculties of the uni. do not represent the whole range of career (and interest) possibilities. Hence, I have so many friends who have changed major several times but are not yet sure of what they would really like to do. But at the same time, there is all those people that have studied in classics but end up working in some business company and they love it. Although you may not know right now what you really want, one day the opportunity will present itself. After that its probably all about grabbing it when it comes.

hehe I really hope you find your dream job ^^
hopefully in grad school I won't change idea either hehe

i tried to take all the courses that interested me the most, and then retrospectively I looked at my freshman and sophmore courses and could see where my passion lay.

i've known what i wanted to pursue since i was 12 years old. i spent a lot of time researching the field, reading whatever i could find and eventually though that it'd be a good idea to go for it. i think when u know what u want to do it just clicks in place.

I never really gave it much thought. I started telling people I was going to be a lawyer when I was about 12 years old (since it was one of the few occupations I could think of, and I didn't want to be a cop, firefighter, teacher or doctor). I just sort of kept heading in that direction... now here I am. When I was a senior in high school, I decided that I'd be a polisci major in college... and that's what I did. There was no epiphany, nor was there any point along the way where I starting thinking I'd made a terrible decision.

You really don't need to be in school much longer. If you're on track to graduate this year, you can just go ahead and do that, then figure out what it is you want for a career. Your major doesn't dictate what you can do with your life, and plenty of psych majors get jobs that have nothing to do with psychology. Unless you decide that you want to do something that's going to require a different major (and not that many things will), or that you absolutely cannot stand another second of psychology (assuming you still have classes or a thesis or something left to do), you might just want to go ahead and graduate this year.

I think I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career in visual arts. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. Hobbies/interests came and went throughout my life, but art has always stayed with me. smile.gif

Well, for me personally I have being preparing for my major since I was like a little kid, haha. I am an art major and I have been drawing since forever so I always knew I would go into art. Since my parents knew I liked art I have been taking art classes since I was 6 which definitely helped mold me as an artist. After I graduate I am going to art school for a second B.A. I wasn't sure which major I wanted but the counselor I visited advised me to go into illustration and as soon as she showed me artwork from that area it just felt very correct for me so that's what I want my second major to be in.

Anyway, maybe you can seek a minor in something you are interested in. And are you totally sure you do not like psychology for sure? Isn't psychology pretty broad? Sorry, I don't know too much about it. Maybe you just need to find the area you like. Hopefully, you can resolve this issue and find out what feel rights for you smile.gif

It just kinda happened. I originally started off doing music and about a year or so later I changed it to political science. I decided to take an introductory criminal justice class cause I thought it would be beneficial to me in politics and I became passionate about criminal justice and by the end of that term I changed my major and love my major and am very passionate.

Thanks for the advice and that was such a great story! Looking at what your highest grades is a really good idea and its the best feeling to actually WANT to go class. You seem really passionate about East asian Hist so I doubt you'll change your major.

Wow,thanks ronmexico that really good advice and did think about that, I guess it just sounds more sensible coming from someone else. I am thinking about nursing for awhile and Idef need a specific degree for nursing (just my luck). I think I am going to focus on nursing for now. I am def gonna complete mypsych degree cuz Im so close but not right now since I am one of those people that cant focus on something if they have something esle on their mind ( One track mind??). You seemto really have your stuff together (i read some of your advice on the law school thread) so thanks a lot!!

I didn't know what I wanted to do until after I was out of high school. My cousin was pursuing some things into Business. He explained a bit of it to me, I looked it up and found myself being able to relate to some of these things so I decided thats what I wanted to do. So just explore some things that might interest you and it will come to you.

Haha, well, I'm glad I could help, and I'm glad somebody thinks I have my stuff together. If you're thinking about nursing, have you considered getting an accelerated BSN after you finish your bachelors? Apparently it's just a one or two year program. I would assume you've fulfilled a lot of the prerequisites already, though you could check and see if you'd be able to take whatever you need before graduating. I don't know if you've looked into this at all, but this site seems to have a really good list of the schools that offer the degree: http://www.allnursingschools.com/featured/accelerated-bsn/

I wanted to take Mass Comm Journalism, but I got Food Tech. *sigh* I used to like Food Tech but it seems now I just lost the interest in science. I mean, I love learning about those basic science facts related to my everyday life, but doing science stuff for my career? No way. But heck, I'm already taking this so might as well do all out. Maybe someday when I got enough money, I'll go back to school and take Mass Comm. Or Media Study. It's possible right?
Life is a one man's show.

mmm, i took a class in college that helps you figure out what you want to do. it helps a lot. =] if the college you're going to provides a class called career & life planing, you should take it then. you could take it online too. =] it might have a different name for your college though. but yeah, the class helped me narrow down the choices i want to pursue.
