So my dad and brother want to get a daily commuter with a budget of $10k. 1998 was the year Toyota introduced VVT-i in the SC 400 and in the Supra. This V-8 has more power than the previous V8 and gets better fuel economy than the V6 version. How much would you be willing to pay for this? I have doubts about them getting a 10-year old car. Are there other newer, comparable cars for under $10k? They don't drive stick, btw, so rule those out. I'm going to go test drive this one for them this weekend.

i drove a 95 sc400 for about 5-6 years. its a reliable car but when things starts to go at high mileage..it will be expensive to replace.

the gas mileage at the time it was released was decent. for todays' standard... not so good.

also the g can already run mid 13s stock and the hks intakes adds an estimated 10 extra hp and the exhausts add like 8 so yeah it should shove off about 1.5 to 2 sec off my times

I forget, was this engine part of the Toyota engines that could potentially sludge (which was a common issue during this time period)?

I know the Camry and the Lexus ES series were proned to it, not sure of the SC.

Well, I test drove it yesterday at Berkeley. Appearance-wise everything was pristine inside, outside, underneath, and in the engine bay. But when I was accelerating on an up-sloping curving on-ramp, I noticed sluggish throttle/torque response. The brakes were squishy and weak and shocks needed replacing. Told my dad that this one was a no-go and he should wait for a good deal to come along on the newer years.

I researched more and found the '99 got bigger brakes and the '00 has a fuel vapor recovery system.

I don't think this applies to the V8 engine, based on this:
"Toyota Motor Sales, (TMS) U.S.A., Inc., announced in April 2002 a new customer satisfaction program for owners of 1997 through 2002 Toyota and Lexus vehicles equipped with 3.0 liter V6 or 2.2 liter 4-cylinder engines." (http://www.corolland.com/sludge.html)

Thanks for the heads up though.

SC's Gone Wild

The Tokyo Drift bit was a bit corny. I was expecting to see NOS-action, maybe some drifting, and a half naked chick at the finish line to make it less corny. rolleyes.gif

I'm leaning more towards them getting the SC after seeing those cleanly done ones. Almost makes me want to sell my Celica and get an SC to mod up VIP-style for myself, spending maybe only a couple grand more in the end. ALMOST. I e-mailed the link to my dad and brother. I hope they find one in black or white.

for a 98', $9,900 is a bit tad much for 120k miles, id offer $8,700. and dont worry about the milage and or year. the 1uz-fe engine [v8] will last forever, not to mention their the same in landcriusers who my dad owns two, one lstill running at 260k miles. its very durable and will last a long time. as for the 2jzge [INLINE 6] not V6, same engine as the non turbo supra mkiv. that also, will last forever. ive seen some running clean at 350K +miles!!! and still pulling hard. gas milage is about normal from 18 to maybe around 26 miles per gallon depending on your foot. i own a 92 5spd sc300, and its my car, as in pride haha. but anyway heres my car.

visit clublexus.com for more questions or info. my user name on there is product.sc
hope i helped some.

You can definitely go cheaper. I've have 2 SC400's and I'm looking for a third. I'm also from ClubLexus. [SCboy] (I'm using my gf's soompi account)

ex sc300-400 owner here.... car was reliable... 150k miles on it.... but around that time most of my automated eletronics are broken... the right side window module is broken... automatic seat recliner is broken... instrument gauge light is broken....stock radio led is faded , steering wheel recliner is broken also. this is a 93 sc300. my 98 400 had lower mile and had more power... it was much more enjoyable car.

I would most definitely go cheaper on the price . Even though its a reliable car, I drove my cousins around for a few days and I liked it.
