Go to school go to school go to school, get an education.

Supposedly eventually end up with a very nice paying slave job.

How many of you guys went to school and didn't get the pay you expected?

*Edit

Also, anyone who has a success story to share?

That having no social life for a couple of years paid off?

Well, going to clown college kind of implies that you aren't going to get much pay to begin with.
But then again, it's not about the dough insomuch as the fulfillment derived from terrorizing children.

Parents fed me that crap too, but I guess it paid off.

I worked half assed in highschool and uni, but still graduated. I did not at all give up any of my social life during uni. Those were the best times~!

My 1st job was decent, and then I got promotions and now earn pretty well for my age. I have an apartment in the City, own a car and have a fantastic social life.

It's true and it's false.

I listened to that gospel and now i'm doing well in the field I don't really like, but ever in pursuit of more means less time for fun...So I just decided bump this, I'll do what I like now and at least I have a stable, comfy skill to fall back on if I crash and burn. Let's all pray that I don't crash or burn because I really want to fall asleep everytime I get to my desk. dry.gif

Even if you learn anything, college will act as a cushion, especially during all important 20-30 year old phase.

I know several people at workplace who never went to college. They can do the job, but they're penalized on pays and overlooked during promotion opps. So many of them are attending college part time.

Unless you know exactly what you want, and know a good way of achieving it, I think college is a good safety net.

Part 1 of my story is college. WIN/LOSE: I picked the right school for my major, Cal Poly ranked #1 public school and #4 among public and private schools for undergrad engineering in the nation FTMFW. Social life wasn't that hard to sacrifice because it [1] was the least diverse public school in CA, [2] had a high guy:girl ratio in engineering land, and [3] was in the old retired White folk hick town of San Luis Obispo FTMFL.

Part 2 of my story is post-college. WIN/LOSE becoming WIN/WIN: I didn't get the pay I expected. I got more than expected. WIN. I didn't grow up here, didn't know the area, and only knew a handful of people. FAIL. But as I explore the territory and meet more locals, I turn it into WIN.

In college you may have to sacrifice some social life to truly reap the benefits of the education presented before you. So yeah, don't want to waste what you're paying for but still make sure you build your social network. A job is a slave job only if you perceive it that way.

Playing is only fun when you have money and spending money is only fun when you earn them so start playing when you can afford it. School is not about playing and you can't afford it anyways.

Meh I partied a lot in school and that only really affected my marks in 2nd year. I could have tried harder in highschool too but... mehhhhh.

Right now though.. I'm definately friggin under paid and the job market in Toronto is absolutely ridiculously dismal so I'm screwed for now.

It's not so much "Work hard now, play later" its more like "do whatever you want and depending on how lucky/well connected you are life will be a joke."

Childhood is brief, Maturity lasts forever. Whats the rush?

I think a person with real talent has the ability to work hard, and enjoy life at the same time.
Don't expect working full-time and actually having more income will automatically attract new friends.
If anything, people should work on their social skills while in college, because virtually everyone is around your age, with the same general vision, and experiencing the same general life.

With that said, I would rather have less time and more money to actually do the things I want, rather than having LOTS of time and no money.

i am sacrificing a lot of my time right now. i work 10.5 hrs/6 days a week. but...i'm doing well. and i'll def. be better off for it.

i still can go out, but only on sat. night. sunday is my only resting day,so i pretty much don't do anything, sometimes i'll go to the movies with friends or family.

as far as high school n uni., i think everyone regrets not studying harder. i regreted not studying harder the day we did application for college.

The saying hope nourishes the youth comes to mind. Which I think is total BS.

There is no guaranteed later, balance everything.

We can hope, right? I am working hard to go from corporate america to running my own business full time. It does leave just a little bit of free time for a social life. If this thread is still open in a year or two, I'll check back and let you know how that went. ;-)

if you go to school, get an education and end up in a slave job all your life and end up being unhappy, that's not your parents fault. that's yours. successful people in this world work hard and smell the roses occasionally. majority of these people do have an education. it's not an entirely false saying. it's just that success isn't all about memorizing textbooks. happiness and money may as well be the same as courting women. you have to pick up the nuances and have the insight to make the right moves to succeed.

Sounds good. Good luck with your new venture and keep us posted. smile.gif
"But when it ends and while it ends, something comes, after so much rage, persistence, obstinacy, extravagance; something entirely unexpected and touching in its mildness and goodness. With the motif passed through many vicissitudes, which takes leave and so doing becomes itself entirely leave-taking, a parting wave and call, with this D G G occurs a slight change, it experiences a small melodic expansion. After an introductory C, it puts a C sharp before the D. . .and this added C Sharp is the most moving, consolatory, pathetically reconciling thing in the world. It is like having one's hair or cheek stroked, lovingly, understandingly, like a deep and silent farewell look. . . . " (Mann: 55).

It's not crap logic, and I can see why it can make sense- but yeah, my parents said this all the time (it was the justification they used to pull me out of a prestigious liberal-arts college I loved and bully me into going to law school instead. I think I can safely say that the last four years have been the most miserable ones of my life, but I don't blame them for it- and hopefully, I can find a way to earn money and not hate myself).
