i'm about to be a junior and i've always had a problem staying focus, studying right. i've never really understood the right way to "study". when i sit down and try to do homework or study by reading and memorizing the material, i go on facebook. it's like a natural habit. or i turn on my ipod thinking i really need that song playing in my ears now. or i just think about other things and worry about stuff. i just tune out. i'm sure i'm not the only one, am i? =/ i need to get rid of these habits ASAP and since i'm starting the most crucial year of my life in 3 days, i need tips on how to stay FOCUSED and not get distracted easily. my ipod and facebook are two big things that distract me from staying focused at home. and thinking about things and other people ... o_O

Go to a room far away from the computer and place your iPod in a place that's somewhat hard to reach.

I hear that Instrumental Music helps you focus quite a bit ^__^. But as for me, I grab a snack before studying, then get down to business. Muaha, good luck!

Limit your time with the computer if you can't help but go on.
I'm starting Junior year too. Since my schedule this year is going to be intense I'm limiting my computer usage.
Go to an area away from your computer and study there. Only use the computer when needed, like typing up essays and such.
Just put your ipod away. Classical music helps though.

Mmmm I used to use Leech Block so I wouldn't go on sites that would distract me, but eventually I just un-installed Leech Block and control myself.

Try setting external influences to prevent you from being distracted. Aka Leech Block, turning off the comp, disconnecting the comp, disconnecting the internet. Not being at the computer.

Etc. etc.

I honestly don't study. x[
I'm only going to be a sophomore this year, I don't think a lot of studying is going to be required, but for me, studying doesn't help at all.
The only thing that helps is listening to the teacher (for me), and maybe last minute peeks before the exams start. x[

I prefer to get out of my house to study. I go to the public library or university library (this one is good, because the library is so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. No lie. It's a little creepy). At home, there are too many distractions.

One word: willpower.
Turn off your Ipod and computer. Put them away and just study. There's really no other way to stay focused than to be determined to stay focused.

It usually helps me study if I'm eating/have food in my stomach. smile.gif Study at night!

I tune out sometimes, too, and then I always have to snap myself out of it. Usually what I'll do is give myself a time limit because I can only study or do homework for x amount of time. If I give myself all the time in the world, I will take all the time in the world to finish, and not be able to accomplish anything else that I'd need to do that day. :/

Exactly what I do. XDD

I am the WORST and most extreme procrastinator. Trust me, I'm not proud of it at all!
I dread some of my classes so much that I just forget all about it and relax until right before the deadlines.
Like this summer...I can't believe myself. Put off APUSH reading (120 pages), Pride and Prejudice (read some), Physics work, and etc.

I found that making a promise to yourself can work.
For me, somtimes I forget the long-term goal at hand. So I wrote a letter to myself and I posted it in a picture frame. I know, it's lame, but it works for me.

Just things that remind me to just not be lazy. Basically people don't want to study because of laziness.

for me, i don't use my ipod to listen to music
i just use windows media player on my comp and create a playlist of NON english music
i prefer to listen to non english/ nonlyrical music so i don't try to pay attention to the lyrics

yeah.. and then i just turn off the comp screen & do homework
don't turn it back on until you're done

but every 1-2 hours you should take a little break
don't get too carried away on your break though.. like don't go on soompi or YT or something that's bound to capture your interest quickly and leave you stranded there

good luck (:

i have the exact same problem, even if i go into a room without the computer/ipod i always somehow end up on facebook or singing along to dbsk songs...

you should definitely go to the library, it really helps you stay focused. it actually worked for me (: really, i usually have the shortest attention span EVER when it comes to studying but when i go to the library i can study for about 4, 5 hours straight. good luck<3

I AM EXACTLY THE SAME. I'M IN THE CONSTANT NEED FOR MUSIC. I'm a quite artistic person, too. So music plays a HUGE role in my life. I really, really need it to get rid of stress.

Today, I went into a room without the computer. And it helped a bit. :]
But I admit, I always had the damn computer on my mind LOL.

When I'm studying, I play classical music, close the computer, turn off the tv and get to work.

one of my frds does the following routine
-come back to school and sleep
-wake up around 2-4am
-start on hw

its a good time (2-4am) to do hw because almost everyone is asleep
so theres no one to talk to on aim/msn/fbchat/etc.
and ur family should be asleep too
so no one to bother you

I go to the public library. If not ... well I make the whole house suffer and shut off the internet. Technology is distracting sad.gif

I find that I am focused easily when I'm at school, so sometimes, I'll go in the IMC. Or I like to get out of the house and study at the library. Less distractions and it's a better atmosphere for me to study in than at home where there are all sorts of distractions.

one way i focus is just thinking about my future.
if i keep on slacking off, then i'm bound to not get into a good college, or a college at all.
so since that thought scares me,
i just study more. smile.gif

I use a lot of time management (actually, it's the first time I'm doing this and I'm a senior, how sad. )smile.gif But, what you would want to do is spread out your work so that way, you don't feel overwhelmed and you will be motivated to do it. What I do is that, if I have something due on Wednesday and it's a Monday, I'll do half of it, and do the other half on Tuesday. I do that with everything that is due two days later. I do the homework that is going to be due first (Such as, the next day, first period) and what not. Also, if you're prepping for anything (like the SATs) I would study a few things each night (Like answering a SAT question or working on a practice test). Also, if you're in need of memorizing something, look through it each night and it will stick to you. :]

I have the same problem with music and the computer, I need music to concentrate, but, sometimes I start singing along with the lyrics and wanting to dance. xD So stick with soft music.
