I know this has been asked before, but I just don't find the damn topic.

I've been working out for three months now and I've realised that I always have a stitch. It doesn't matter if I ate a tiny apple one hour before cardio, it still hurts, like a really burning pain under the ribs. Now, due to my lack of time, I have to go jogging before college, early in the morning, and I was wondering if it is healthy to jog on an empty stomach, because if I eat something before, it'll hurt like hell.

Should I eat something before? Will just a glass of juice be enough?
Everytime I try to find out, I get different answers.

do you only wanna dance?.

I've always ran on an empty stomach, ever since my days in the military and have never had any problems with it. Actually now that I think about it, when I do run after eating I have the same issues as you lol.

There's no health problems with running on an empty stomach, just eat something after though that's important.

yea eating something after is crucial.
I've read a lot of stuff saying that running in the morning
on an empty stomach is the most beneficial but then again
there are a lot of variables. I always eat something
before i do any kind of workout though.

It's better to eat after exercising. I heard if you exercise on an empty stomach, you burn more calories since the body has to use stored up energy.

I get stomachaches if I exercise right after I eat, I have to have at least an hour to an hour and half after eating before I exercise.

I never eat or drink before I run =/
If I eat before, I get that side pain
If I drink, I can feel the water inside me while I run... lol it's rather distracting

anytime doing some kind of cardio, you really should have some carbs in your body.

and i'm not talking about fatty breads, sweet pastries, things like that;

something light, a granola bar or a banana would do.

not only are you doing yourself a favor (giving energy for the run)

but also you're doing a service to your body's overall health.

well if it's early morning it's good to have something in your body before working out. i would usually have a cup of yogurt or a granola bar...

but if it's a night time jog, i'd just jog with what i have had in my stomach throughout the day, i wouldn't go out the way just to eat something. wait an hour or so after your jog before you eat too~

Eat after, burn more calories.

most people tend to burn LESS calories if they run on an empty stomach. this is because they have less energy to maintain intensity and pace, and therefore the workout doesn't burn as much as someone who has extra energy in their system.

the notion of running on an empty stomach was meant to burn more FAT calories, which seems to hold true in a lot of cases. but it's not correct to say you burn more calories when running on an empty stomach. you merely increase the possibility of burning more fat calories during your workout.

this is NOT recommended for any exercise outside of cardio. weights, HIIT and other anabolic exercises are better if you have a meal before your workout.

your body needs fuel for exercise. getting in carbs is a quick source of fuel to get you going. if you exercise enough, you'll have days when you know you got a good workout or a bad one. often times, the bad ones are ones where you're lacking energy and explosiveness. getting in some carbs will help you up the intensity of your workout.

what i usually do is drink half a cup of orange juice or apple juice. sometimes a cup if i need a quick boost. you can burn off all the calories in a 5~10 minute run [medium intensity], and run another 30 or so minutes to burn off extra calories. i usually cant last more than 20~25 minutes when i run empty and it's not as good as when i do have some fuel in me. the jump start from juice helps me last longer and keep a level of intensity in the workout. it's the best compromise between eating a meal before and starving. i also make sure it's pure carbs. quick energy that i can expend here and now.

I eat some kind of fruit before working out. If I don't, I don't have any energy. =_=
I heard that after working out, you should wait 2 hours before eating...?
I never understood why though. Can someone explain this? Or is it completely false? O_o

Some people say it's bad to run on an empty stomach because you have less energy to use but, since you get stomach aches if you have something to eat, I'd try running on an empty stomach, just at a shorter distance to see how you hold up first and slowly build up your distance again.

I'm going to totally ignore all the verbal garbage, skip past trying to solve everyone elses questions on this issue. Then...

You state : you will be running in the morning ~ this is around the time you wake up.
Go jog/run on an empty stomach within 30 minutes of waking ~
Immediately after wards have a huge breakfast based mainly on protein.

Huge, and I don't mean huge in relation to if a small dwarf bunny ordered breakfast at the Cafeteria huge.

If your not fat and you exercise without eating anything like a peanut butter sandwich or anything at all beforehand, you get to the point where you burn muscle not fat. Then you loose more weight cause muscle weighs more than fat which gives you the false accomplishment thinking you have burned fat.
