Hi guys,
Just curious if anyone here knows anything about the Japanese Import car scene in Korea and more specifically importing a Japanese car from Japan into Korea for road use.
As Korea is a Left Hand drive country I never thought it could happen but I recently heard that there are indeed Japanese right hand drive cars on the road in Korea.
If by chance anyone has done it, can they let me know the approximate costs and (troubles getting a RHD car road registered in Korea)?

If its not stock and modified, will they not allow it to be registered in Korea??

Maybe not the forum to ask these questions but dunno where else to....

Peace.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm glad to know that for certain its a possibility to do so now.
I'm in Australia right now which is pretty strict like the USA, so it took me by suprise that this could be done when I first heard of RHD cars in Korea.

If he's there for education, he CAN bring it there without penalty since it's personal belongings. In Canada, a Japanese car only needs to be 15 years old to be eligible for import, the reason why there are so many Skylines up here (and the R33 GTS being recently legal, people are trading in). I'd say check a Korean government website, if any, to see if there are any specific regulations about importation, such as cars barred from importing, etc.

Two options for car shipping: RO/RO (Roll on, Roll off) or Containter.

Example: Let's say I want to ship a 1992 Nissan Skyline GTS-4 sedan from Japan to Vancouver... I have those 2 options.

RO/RO: Uses a car ferry meant for newly shipped cars to export to other countries,so it's essentially like shipping a new car overseas. It's expensive and it's hard to find space on a boat, but the car is basically safe, and arrives in about 2-3 weeks with this method.

Container: Shipped via one of those 18-wheeler cargo containers and on a container ship. It's rather cheap (about $1200 for the Skyline's case(especially if you can find someone importing a car, save money by sharing the container), but more or less depending on the amount of volume the car takes up in the container). HOWEVER! It takes roughly 4-6 weeks for the car to arrive at port, and you need to pay a destuffing company to get your car out of the container, and if you go cheap on this, the car WILL be damaged (a good destuffer in Vancouver costs about 550 dollars US) and the car is more at risk for damage in the container.

I forgot to mention; You need to check if Korea's government has any kind of mandatory car safety rules on cars, such as having certain lighting, or even emissions regulations.

EDIT: I used a rough cost estimator to see how much it would cost to ship an R34 GT-R from Japan to the port in Pusan, Korea, and by container, it ranges from 600-1000 dollars US for the container, and an ETA of 3-7 days. Not bad.... So in total its about $25-40,000 for the car in US dollars, plus shipping and possible taxes the price might be roughly 30-45k.

NOTE: Again an estimate, but these are just ballpark figures.
