Maki rolls are the sushi that are cut in circles with nori (seaweed) wrapped around rice.
Temaki rolls are sushi that is rolled with nori and shaped like a cone.
Nigiri sushi is the sushi with raw fish placed over the rice.
Basically, if you like seafood, anything is good...the only thing that I'd be weary of eating is uni (sea urchin). I've never tried it myself, but I've heard it's awful.
Other than that, pretty much everything else is good. Anything with tuna or salmon is my favorite...and cream cheese!

it depend..sushi really means in term of raw fish...but technically..i dont really mean it that way..just basically anything roll up could be called sushi..o.0?
spider roll mainly just contain cucumber and soft shell crab
whatever fit according to your like.
for me personally, i dont eat raw, but there are a lot of other things u can eat that're fried or not raw...typically the most famous one may be the california roll, which consist of imitation crab, avocado, and cucumber. so just read the description of the rolls and see if u like it or not.

When i order, i usually get-- hmmm, for cooked ones are Shrimp Tempura, Crunchy Shrimp, and Spider (soft crabs) rolls. (It's contains exactly what it sounds like)
For raw fish i always order the Rainbow roll.
The Obe roll is pretty good too along with the Twister roll. I don't remember what these contains but all i know is that it was good. =\ The Catepillar roll is okay.. the honey mustard sauce-ish thing on top is just too sweet. But then again i think the sushi depends on the different restaurants and chefs. So yeah. =]
BTW, people always tell me that beginners like the California roll. I don't know.. maybe you should i try it?

I tend to just stick with cooked foods, since I can't handle raw foods very well (sensitive stomach).
But sometimes I still take the risk of bad-stomach-ache, since it tastes really good.

Other sushi that I recommend are : Eel (not the roll, but the sushi rice with grilled eel ontop of it), ebi furai (fried prawn sushi), and california roll..

If it is your first time, you gotta go somewhere reputable.
The quality of the raw fish matters a lot, and the chef must take their job seriously.
Never go on a monday. Fish markets are typically closed and you will not get fresh fish
A great place often meets the following criteria:
1. Chef's passion and attention to detail
2. They will prepare the nigiri for you with the correct amount of wasabi or seasoning and will tell you to use soy sauce or no soy sauce
3. Homemade soy sauce/ponzu and freshly grated wasabi
4. Very little/few rolls; the more traditional places do not offer any rolls whatsoever and will probably glare at you if you ask for any
5. The fish/seafood comes in on a daily basis. None of that defrosted fish or day old fish.
6. The quality of the rice. There are different schools of thought on this. Some like to use very warm rice. The rice should be complementary to the fish you are served.
Omakase is a Japanese term meaning to entrust. If you find a good place, it is often better to request for omakase, as they will often give you off menu items based on what is the most fresh for the day. Although, you give up the option to choose, this is often a very good choice as they are more knowledgeable. They may also ask you about what you like and don't like, so it's not random. Also, as they serve you dish after dish, they should also gauge your reactions to the dishes and see what you like and do not like
What not to do:
1. It may offend some chefs to drown your nigiri in soy sauce, they would prefer to dip it fish side down so that the soy sauce is complementary and not overwhelming
2. Don't mix the ginger with the sushi; it's a palette cleanser between pieces
