Do you find a way to limit your participation in class?
I'm study literature and really enjoy what I'm studying. I found recently that I've been raising my hand two or more times in class to ask/answer questions. Maybe too many times, even though they're good questions and answers. Part of the reason why I raise up my hand also is because participation counts for 20% of my final mark for each of the five courses I'm in.

For some of my classes, I've decided to not raise up my hands. Some of the profs in my classes go around the class to ask for answers anyway. If they asks an open-ended question in class (which he usually does), I don't have to answer, right? I've decided to not even bother putting up my hand to ask a question. If I have a problem, I'll go see them during their office hours.

I don't really think professors keep track on the people who participate in class... depending on your class sizes. I don't really worry much about participating cause yeah, I always get As and Bs without participating much in class.

Don't take my advice, that's just me.

It depends on the subject, the teacher, and the grade. I mean, I'd rather look like an idiot in front of people I'll probably never talk to again (maybe, hah) and get a good grade rather than keep quiet and receive a mediocre grade, you know? But if the participation doesn't really count, then I don't care so much. Haha.

It depends on the subject, class size, my own confidence, and teacher. I usually have no problem with discussions in smaller classes with 22 or less people. Classes like that usually encourage participation for a grade anyway. Anything more and I would feel like I'm interrupting....For example, in my larger classes with 100+ people there's always SOMEONE who feels the need to ask questions every class. It gets annoying after a while and sometimes the answers to their questions were already in the lecture/study material...And I wonder why they don't just ask the teacher during study hours.

When I don't have any real interest in a class, I don't even bother talking...lol.

It really all depends on the size of your class and how much the teacher stressed that participation would count for your grade. When I have a teacher that stresses on the first few days about participation, I try to say one short and sweet thing. I keep it simple because I have a similar problem. When I was taking an English class, my teacher asked what seemed to be an open ended question that I tried to answer, but I guess it wasn't because he went on about my answer was wrong and wouldn't move on to the next person til I came up with a better/the right answer. Ever since then, I've kept my class participation to a minimum for fear of getting called out.

For my major, usually the class participation is around 20%, so it's a lot of pressure for me coz I'm really introverted. I try to talk at least once, but it's hard. What I've found out is that if I go into office hours and talk to the TA/professor one-on-one, that usually gives me full points even though they don't actually admit it.

Being an American Studies and History major, a lot of what I'm learning in class requires discussion and participation.. I used to be afraid of raising my hand because I didn't want to look stupid, but it got to a point where I felt dumb because I was the only one NOT answering questions. I just started thinking of it this way.. I'm never going see half of these people again, and if they think I'm stupid, oh well. I'm not in college to be a gain popularity in class or have all the right answers, I'm there to learn and be able to talk to professors who can help me along.

when i was in highschool, I raised my hand for pretty much everything. If I got called on, then I would wait 2 or 3 questions before I raised my hand again. I try to be considerate like that.

One of my professors just tells us to yell out our questions and comments, lol. I'm just conscious about speaking up. Somehow even if I want to say stuff, nothing comes out. But since classes just started today, for the sake of participation points I'll speak up another time :]

since my classes are tiny, my professors take notice to who's participating or not. so I've gotten a little used to raising my hand.

I think it all depends what type of environment your class is..

Like my public speaking class, everyone is talks alot so I dont hav any heistation not to raise my hand, but lecture classes where nobody talks, I dont raise my hand at all..

i just answer without raising my hands..lol...
i have classes that have 15 students and i have one that has 30+ students..
when i'm at the 15 students only class sometimes my professor would ask what something (an english word/term) means and my classmates would go mellow.gif..but i'll still wait for someone to answer (although i know no one would)when my professor's already getting frustrated i'll just blurt out my answer..lol..

Depends on the subject, as well as the environment the class is in.
Ironic how I raise my hand more in classes that don't distribute participation marks, because I'm more knowledgeable and keen on those subjects, but I can't say ANYTHING in classes where participation marks do count, dammit ==;;

I'm scared of looking like a know-it-all, or an idiot if I have questions >_<

I hardly raise up my hand. There's no marks for participation in class since the size of class is quite big.
I don't even think that the lecturer would notice me. So, yeah. I end up just sit quietly at my place and listen to the lecturers.

If I knew the correct answer, I'd raise my hand or just say it out. If it was something related to asking a question about something, I wouldn't ask since I feel the questions I ask might be stupid or plain obvious, though on some occassions I may depending on the situation. It'd be more favourable to speak out in small classes, large classes not so much...
