so i've never been to the gym before, but i have been thinking about joining because i gained a few pounds and would love to get toned.
since it's my first time joining, i'm not sure how often i'll end up going.
one of the gym's i've been looking at is, LIFETIME FITNESS. it's open 24 hours and has an indoor pool and outdoor pool that's open during the summer. it also has a steam room and jacuzzi. it has basketball courts and rooms where you can play raquetball, but i'm 99% positive i won't be using them. the cardio area is really nice with lots of machines and they hold classes. i really like them for having classes available. there's also a cafe downstairs. they have a spa available by appointment as well. so i took a tour yesterday and it was great=] BUT the enrollment fee is $99 with a starting fee of $75 and then a monthly fee of $79. just the enrollment/starting fee alone is pretty steep, but $79 a month as well? it seems like i'll be forcing myself to go just to get my money's worth.
another gym i was thinking about is, PLANET FITNESS. it's open 24 hours on weekdays and closed earlier on weekends. i haven't been to scope it out yet, but a few of my friends are members. they tell me the machines are plenty and clean. and REALLY CHEAP. an enrollment fee of $59 if you do the plan for $10 a month. wow, for $10 a month i wouldn't care if i went or not. but you can also pay $20 a month for access to tanning beds and other benefits. this place doesn't have classes.
another gym is SNAP FITNESS. it's in my neighborhood. i could walk to the place. it's 24 hours and when you enter with your card key, the lights turn on automatically. the cardio machines are nice and there's also a tanning booth! the joining fee is $59 and then monthly fee of $39. this place doesn't offer classes as well and it doesn't have shower stalls, but that might be ok because it's so close to where i live.
sorry it was so long! help me decide on which gym=]

To me it sounds like you don't even really
want to go to the gym. It sounds like you're counting on money
as something that will motivate you in a sense.
If you're really thinking of taking those classes and have the
money to spare, go to gym A. I personally would go to gym B.
You have friends there already and it's more likely you'd go more
often if they go frequently. Well in my view anyway.
It's also a lot more price effective. Just my $0.02

Does your school have a gym? I would find that out and first because they usually make those affordable for their students. I know for my brother, their wellness fees are already included so they can go to the gym whenever they want. When I was in college, the gym was $65 per semester and $175 for the year and it was a two-story gym with rock climbing, olympic-size pool, sauna, cardio and weight equipment and classes.
I think what you should do is see if you can do a trial thing for every gym you're considering and see aht you want to use the gym for. I personally like classes so I would join the first gym regardless of the price. I don't tan in tanning beds so that serves no purpose to me at the other gyms. Everybody has different preferences so you should try them out and see what you want in a gym and choose from there.

I agree with Makaveli. Even though money can be tight when you're a college student, you just have to learn how to manage it.
But I have a membership with 24hr Fitness, just for the club access only is about 34.99 and it has indoor basketball court, pool, aerobics class, and other stuff I forgot. As with other places, they do offer personal trainers, but I think that's a little bit more.
