have you tried reseting it by pressing the menu and center button?
if all your music is backed up on your computer, try "factory restore" through itunes.

when it freeze, you should hold the circle button and the up button (the top of the scroll pad, if you know what i mean) together.
that's what i did with my Ipod nano 3rd generation.
you hold both of those down until you see the Apple. (you know, the design of the Ipod, the Apple?)
after that, you can let go and it after a moment, it will return to the main menu.
--edit--
OMG. i just realize that this is not what you wanted to know. =__=
opps, sorry, can't help you there. my ipod has never stop playing before.
just reset the settings or restore it on the Itunes.
hope it helps.
and hope your Ipod works again. smile.gif (i know you feel. i get very scare when something goes wrong with my Ipod)

Been on HIATUS for a LONG, LONG time. For that, I apologize sincerely. I'm back now, and I'm gonna finish what I started.

So basically your iPod died?
That happened to mine about 22 days after I purchased it.
I turned it off and didn't do anything to it for a few days, decided to check it again after that and I worked fine again.
Try that perhaps?
If it still doesn't work, get a replacement one. Remember to bring the receipt and I hope you're still under warranty.
