i don't know where else to ask this and i don't want to make a whole topic about it
i'm doing the post-graduation job search thing and i feel like i'm getting pushed around a lot by these companies. like we'll schedule something, and the company will postpone or cancel last-minute or neglect to approve my suggestions for a time completely. i know it's their call and that i'm not supposed to ask for much, but is there any way for me to exert more control over the situation? i feel like telling them i have a schedule to work around too, and it's really unfair to me that they can't spare a few minutes just to tell me whether i should bother rearranging my plans for next week to come in for an interview! am i expecting too much? would it be unacceptable to try to counter the plans they make for me with something of my own?
usually, i try to get to know the HR staff member and/or recruiter when we initially discuss the job requirements/functions by asking questions and inserting random tidbits about myself. it's all smalltalk really, but it creates a friendly relationship and gives you more leverage when scheduling interviews. if i am not able to do that from the start, i usually call here and there to get scheduling info, and try to squeeze in other questions about the position i am applying for.
i guess it's my attempt to differentiate sincere interest from desperately wanting a job...and giving more attention does make them feel you're interested...
if all else fails, i brown nose them and say that i've been receiving offers elsewhere, but i really want to take up the opportunity at that company and give a completely valid reason so they wont think you're just making things up. some companies will let you go, but hey, you win som, you lose some, right?
i dont think bad HR necessarily adds up to a bad company. gotta look at the whole of the company, its goals, its services/products, its entire staff, etc to determine whether or not a company is worth working for. as an outsider, the company may just be understaffed to handle administrative duties. (i think HR is one of the first places to undergo budget cuts....but that's just from my limited experience...)
