Why exactly is there a purpose for life coaching? For people who can't help themselves?

It is nothing new ~ in Japanese society they have the term Senpai romanized it is sempai.
Culturally : it is a relationship where traditionally someone older with more life-experience mentors his/her juniors giving them advice and acting as a life guide someone to go to for advice help etc ~ it is also the responsibility of the sempai to be a good influence and make sure their kohai grow up without going through the same mistakes that their more experienced senpai has gone through.
Similarly in korean culture the big brother, older sister terms hyung/oppa - Nuna/Unni : generally are "supposed" to do the same thing in terms of life lessons, tips, financially caring for their younger bros/sisters blahblahblah ~
blah blah blah ~
This isn't necessarily a given - In american culture it is nonexistent for the most part. Western society is about the individual ~ and Asian culture is about the community and family structure ( this is a very general simple statement ).
In more detail this type of life-lesson stuff occurs predominately in chinese korean and japanese cultures due to the teachings of Confucius. Some of this is also seen in vietnamese culture due to direct spread of his teachings from china and korea though for the most part only China, Korea, and Japan have this ingrained into society where this is common if not prevalent.

Leave it to western society to find a way to make money off something that is freely given in East Asian culture ^^
