i honestly would feel really uncomfortable if ANYONE pats my head. in my opinion, it kinda gives off a sense of domination or as if i'm so little, naive, and vulnerable. kind of what adults do to little kids. anyways, not sure what a guy's intention when patting a girl's head. maybe what i've just said? if a guy was stroking the girl's hair, then i'm sure that's another story.

edit: i've just read some guy's comments above and maybe i do have some footing in the door. they like to pat "small" things. so patting a girl's head would be, in a sense, a form of domination, subconscious or not, and thus reasserting their masculinity over the female. sounds kinda like animals, but that's what humans inherently are... we're just more evolved mammals.

I do this all the time to my small friends that are girls. It's usually just a sign of endearment and affection towards them. But the ones I do to often....well I usually have a romantic interest, but I don't want to show it. So *pat pat pat*

But sometimes I do like to show that I'm taller than them for fun. They get so cute when they're mad.

well i mean, maybe i AM over analyzing but it makes things interesting to see the psychological possibilities of it, just because a lot of the times, that side gets overlooked in situations. i'm not saying, OMG i am right listen to me!! i'm just sharing what i think, which may seem weird or over the top with you. haha but anyways, when i read the comments here where some of them say that the guys do it to tease a girl's height compared to theirs, i can't help but think maybe it is some sort of reassertion of their masculinity (and i don't actually mean the men want to take control over the women) because in a sense, height generally plays a major role in male and female relationships, that being the male should be taller than the female, and the female should be shorter than the male. (i do stress generally). in the case of a male patting the female's head, it shows the male is displaying masculine traits (towering over the woman as a sort of protector) while making the female more feminine (the smaller, shorter one, the protected). so it's not really a case of dominance/submissiveness, though it could also be seen that way, but i won't delve into that.

depending on the situation, it can either be a friendly/flirtatious gesture, an "inside-joke" type thing to do with someone you're close to, or extremely patronizing.

i'm not too tall myself, and i was having a serious conversation with a male friend -- a debate if you will. well, after i said what i needed to say, he just smiled and patted me on the head. i almost ripped his throat out.

either way, elperro has a valid point. i'm sure not everyone will agree, but the the poster asked a question and s/he gave a thoughtful answer. everything we do, down to the smallest detail, is for a reason.
