Senior Homecoming go?

guys, would you rather be rejected by the girl you ask to your senior prom? or would you rather go even if the girl is just a distant friend.
people do go as just friends, right? but if a girl accepts, does the guy automatically assume it's more than friends?

i personally don't see anything wrong with going as friends. but do guys usually interpret going to homecoming as more than friends?

because he likes me but i'm indifferent. & i'm just scared that's gonna prevent us from having a good time. it doesn't help that he's super shy.
