People consider cosmetic surgery because they're unhappy with their appearance. I've never had a problem with people who want to improve and alter the way they look. Who is anyone to judge someone who chooses to do this? Just because they are happy with their appearance doesn't mean it works the same way for everyone. It's just so ignorant to look at things from such a narrow scope. There's SO many different reasons out there that people choose to do this- from birth defects to scars to injuries to just enhancing a certain feature. Can it sometimes be attributed to vanity? Sure, but why should someones insecurity about themselves matter so much to the rest of the populace anyway?

Who would oppose cosmetic surgery today??

- The only people I have in mind are religious individuals.

Do you think cosmetic surgery is a bad thing or a good thing?

- I think it's both. Surgeries that are done right usually come out right, but sometimes things can go wrong. For example, there are a number of people who get their eyelids cut off to have bigger eyes but sometimes the surgeons cut too much skin off that the patients can never fully close their eyes again (SCARY!). However, one's life can change for the better if the surgery is a success smile.gif.

Sorry, I don't know if it was much help

i hope you don't mind my opinions :]
i think that... i actually don't know why i used to be so opposed to plastic surgery. perhaps it was the people i hung around with. we were brought up to be content with ourselves, no matter how "ugly" we looked at ourselves. but over time, i guess i got used to the idea of people getting plastic surgery. honestly, now i don't mind it if other people did it, but i would be slightly bothered if a boyfriend did it. just slightly.

I think that as long as you have realistic expectations going into the surgery, it's a valid option for anyone who wishes to purchase appearance-enhancing procedures.

Most cosmetic surgeons are required to do a psychological screening of their patients beforehand to ensure the recipient has a realistic idea of what is attainable with surgery.

We live in an age where science and technology is making all sorts of things possible. To stifle progress in any regard is not a good thing. And just like anything else, too much of anything is dangerous, so don't get addicted to the knife or you'll look much worse, not to mention desperate.

Speaking from experience, I knew a girl who had a breast reduction, and then she had permanent eye makeup applied. After that, she wanted a nose job. Then she got a breast enhancement (firming) surgery done. She began to look like less of a human and more of a humanoid after a while, and I could tell that her impulsive tendencies were beginning to get the best of her. So ... certain tendencies in certain individuals probably equate to being a bad candidate. Just be realistic!

Seriously I only approve it when the person had a accident with their face or any defect that they need to fix to make their lives easier.

I mean whats the point of satisfying many indiviuals? We are all different and if we change our looks to look a certain way like most people do now a days, its SO boring.
All these Korean actresses look the same...I mean I'm sure there are natural ones in there but most look the same.

Even though you may consider yourself ugly in your standard, maybe you're a person who just needs a clothes, makeup, facial fixup to look better.

i think its a respectable decision. you know your body best, so if you think you'll look better with a bit of tweaking, then go for it.
and thats not to say that you're doing it because you'll look better FOR OTHER PEOPLE. its like saying asians get double eyelid surgery to look white. there are heaps doing it to satisfy their OWN image of beauty. its influenced by media, yes, but you are your own master and as such how you define beauty is unique! like when we watch a television show with goodlooking people we don't all agree on who is THEE most beautiful.. plus you know what'll be good for you otherwise you won't be doing it and surgery would be something we contemplate on ALOT beforehand so who can oppose it? like seriously? :x

ultimately, the decision lies with the individual so these issues over morality are just pointless don't you think? no one knows me better than myself so what authority do they have to criticise?

(i sound like i got plastic surgery, but no, i didnt)

and this is such an interesting topic to write about. i would have so many things to say on why im pro plastic surgery. but no, im here writing a paper about how civilization makes humans incapable of transcending with nature. =_=

good point. it's not just about satisfying other people.

another thing to consider is that the procedures are expensive and no matter how cheap or how good it becomes, it can't work miracles. it can't substantially change the existing physiology of a person (can't make naturally big people suddenly rail thin, etc).

good luck with that paper, btw. sounds like a beast! tongue.gif

To be honest, I think that someone who has had plastic surgery done would lose a few respect points in my book. I mean it's their life and they can live it any way they want, but I just don't think it's fair and a bit scary that just because a person is not satisfied with how they were born, they can just buy a new face or body part.
But I definitely respect people who admit that they had plastic surgery done than those who deny it or avoid it all together.

I don't oppose of plastic surgery until you over do it. I mean, getting your eyelids/nose done is one thing. But having 44917492834713814 parts of your body fixed is another.
Wouldn't you feel too fake or something?

in my opinion

if everything about u is NORMAL (not necessary 'perfect', since no one is, and everyone's definition of perfection differs), yet u want to fix it cuz u think u prefer the nose of some actress, then it's bad.

it's good if there's a defect, and u go thru surgery to improve it.

it's hard to argue actually. there isn't a definite answer as to what's right and what's wrong. i just think that if u wanted to get something fixed cuz u think somebody else looks beautiful in it, then it's wrong. whereas to enhance it it's more of a good thing....

i dunno if what i've said is considered helpful... lol...

I think cosmetic surgery is fine smile.gif I think if you feel insecure about the way you look you are allowed to change that if it makes you feel better about yourself. When a person is really really insecure about something, changing that could actually change their entire life. So who would i be to say that they can't do that? mellow.gif

Also the persons thinking about cosmetic surgery are aware of the fact that's it's really expensive and are probably paying for it themselves. It's their money and they can do with it what they please (In reasonable boundaries though laugh.gif meaning paying for a hitman with their money is not okay dry.gif)

Who would oppose comestic surgery today??
People with strong religious, or moral beliefs (god made you a certain way, ..etc)
People who can't afford it/ don't have the courage to do it

Do you think comestic surgery is a bad thing or a good thing?

It's not really either, more of how the person having such procedures uses it. Some people abuse it, just as they would abuse anything else. For some mentally unstable people, this is very bad, as it gives into their negative obsessive behavior (Body Dismorphic something...)

But for something others, it actually is a really great thing. Maybe there was one feature or flaw that made their self-esteem very low. Or maybe an injury at a young age pertinently deformed them, and now they finally have an option to fix themselves up.
However some people believe flaws and such things are what give a person character, so they would be against all that.

It all depends~

Who would oppose cosmetic surgery today? Anyone could oppose cosmetic/plastic surgery. I don't like it, and I'm not even religious. It depends on the individual's own opinion and morals.

Do you think cosmetic surgery is a bad thing or a good thing? I mostly dislike it when it's done in vain; when people do it to look like another, are trying to achieve "perfection," or because someone made fun of them for something that isn't even that big of a deal. If you have like, a defect from birth or something and you want a normal (part here), then I think it's okay.

plastic surgery is good for people psychologically. it helps them to feel good about something that maybe didn't look quite "right" before. Plastic surgery is also helpful after accidents such as car accidents and stuff that can cause permanent scarring or disfigurement which could lead to ridicule by others :\

also, like someone said, it's their money, and its their life. we have no right to interfere with what they choose to do with their body.
