Do colleges look at your total cumulative gpa more or do they look at your GPA year by year? Because let's say your GPA was terrible your first two years but you get a really good GPA your junior year. (A 3.5 or something like that). But by the time you finish HS, your total cumulative GPA turns out to be really bad because of the damage done from freshman and sophomore. (Like a 2.5) ... is that still bad for college even if you do really well junior year? People everywhere say colleges like change, is it ok if your total cumulative gpa turns out to be really sh!tty even if you did really well as a junior? I hope y'all understand my question ..

I'm not going to say that your cumulative GPA is insignificant, but showing improvement year by year is telling them something. As long as you show an upward trend, it should partially compensate for the lack of a high cumulative GPA.

the fact you improved matters, but so does the fact that you did poorly in the past. that's the point of your cumulative GPA

of course it's better than doing poorly all the way through, but it doesn't beat doing well since the beginning

i don't buy that "colleges like to see improvement" thing. in the end, they'd pick the one that did well all the way through.

but like i said, improvement is better than doing poorly all the way through

Colleges look at the cumulative as well as the year by year GPA. I think, as others have said, as long as you show a positive correlation, you should be fine. Heck, colleges love improvement.
