I was browsing soompi and some of the comments led me to open this thread. They were admiring the celeb for having plastic surgery, that the celeb "did everything s/he had to do to achieve their dream" which sounded ironic to me because come down to it, its just buying beauty with money. It's not like they were working hard for their dream, or sacrificing something great (they are getting rid of something they hate instead) that we need to admire them about?

I personally feel indifferent about it. I don't bash people because everyone wants to look beautiful. Plastic surgery is becoming so common nowadays so bashing it wouldn't change a thing. But at the same time, I don't "admire" them for having done it. I don't think they are brave for acknowledging that they did it (because the proofs are so obvious you can't deny anyway.)

So I just want to know what's your take on it?

I personally think that no one deserves to be ugly all their lives and be shunned from society because people don't want to be seen with someone ugly. So I do understand if they need this change to make their life better.

But for people who are not ugly, is it really necessary? Don't you feel that it's kinda scary to change your face so much that you are now "plastic". With all the botox or whatever it is you have underneath, does it not feel fake? Does it not feel like you are having some kind of equipment on your face? lol.

Hm I think deep down I'm a little afraid that plastic surgery is becoming so common these days. I didn't know how common it was until a while ago my new girl friends were talking about going to Korea and having their noses done, the other wants double eyelids. And they are like 16. Maybe I've been living in a cave? Maybe this is the new generation. Well these changes are small so it's not so bad? I have seen pics of people with complete different faces. Like for celebs: "one with less talent but have money to go get plastic surgery = become very beautiful" > "one with more talent but no money for plastic surgery = average look"?

Sorry I guess the whole thing about teenaged girls admiring their celebs for having plastic surgery and think they should be proud for "doing whatever they could to achieve their dream" just irked me a little x.x If they were working hard on improving their voices/acting then that'd be more like working toward their dream.

Well, maybe the comments meant more than just having plastic surgery. I mean, I watched the Big Bang documentaries (it showed them before their debut) and it kind of struck a chord in me because they were working so hard for what they wanted (whether it be practicing dozens of songs to perfection or dancing alone all night in front of the mirror so they can get the moves down solid) -- I don't think I ever worked that hard for anything in my entire life. And no, I'm not saying Big Bang had plastic surgery done -- I'm just saying that being in the entertainment industry is a lot more difficult than people make it out to be.

I agree with you that for some people, plastic surgery is totally unnecessary. Some people don't want to look too different because then everyone would know they got their faces done, so they'd only touch it a little, and then it's just a waste of money because nothing changes. And some people end up looking like roadkill, especially after getting too much plastic surgery (that's probably one of the main reasons why Unee killed herself because of all the bashing about her plastic surgery). Then some people (I assume they're the people that paid the most or got most money to get things fixed from their entertainment companies) look gorgeous AND natural, or people just get over the fact that they got plastic surgery done and leave them alone (Seo In Young).

And you have to realize that for these people, their faces are pretty much what bring in their income -- they have to look good (good face, good body = necessity). Most Korean celebrities don't pay for their own plastic surgery -- it's usually financed by their employers, like entertainment companies who provide managers and coordinators and whatnot. I heard that some celebrities did not want plastic surgery, but were talked into/coerced by their employers...

I would compare plastic surgery to make up. Some girls feel they aren't pretty enough and have to put on make up, some girls simply don't put on make up. I'm not going to hate on a girl who puts on make up nor am I going to like a girl simply because she doesn't wear make up. Likewise, I'm not going to hate someone for plastic surgery nor am I going to like them because they didn't have plastic surgery.

I wouldn't admire someone for wearing make up and I wouldn't admire someone for getting plastic surgery. I wouldn't admire someone for not wearing make up and I wouldn't admire someone for not getting plastic surgery.

I wouldn't recommend plastic surgery however, because there are risks involved, it is costly, and also the crowd you are attracting will be focused on your looks than who you are. Do you want to meet people who care about you only because you look hot? I'm not saying to make yourself ugly but the main goal of many people who undergo plastic surgery is to look hot and appealing in looks.

Quote from wiki about Unee: "Fans of her music decreased while fans of her new sexy look increased, who often urged the singer to reveal herself in Korean edition of Playboy as well as other adult entertainment publications. "

Forest Whitaker Lyrics
And yo whatever comes up comes out
We don't put our hands over our mouth
And whatever comes up comes out
We don't put our hands over our mouth
Whatever comes up comes out
Please mister bass-man lay it on me

Ayo, Dependin on the day, and dependin on what I ate
I'm anywhere from 20 to 35 pounds over weight
I got red eyes and one of them's lazy
and they both squint when the sun shines so I look crazy
I'm albino man, I know I'm pink and pale
And I'm hairy as hell, everywhere but fingernails
I shave a cranium that ain't quite shaped right
Face tight, shiny, I stay up and write late nights
My wardrobe is jeans and faded shirts
A mixture of what I like, and what I wear to work
I'm not mean and got a neck full of razor bumps
I'm not the classic profile of what the ladies want
You might think I'm depressed as can be
But when I look in the mirror I see sexy ass me
And if that's somethin that you cant respect then that's peace
My life's better without you actually
To everyone out there, who's a little different
I say damn a magazine, these are gods fingerprints
You can call me ugly but cant take nothing from me
I am what I am doctor you ain't gotta love me

to me ... people like this are beautiful. smile.gif
Some say i'm a genius, others say i'm crazy
but they all say i'm a little on the weird side

I won't consider surgery, because I like being me. I like it when people say: "Wow! You look just like your older sister!" or "You look like your mom." I mean if I do get plastic surgery than am I saying that my mom and sister are also not beautiful? Thats the way how I see it [ONLY on myself]. I really don't care if people do get plastic surgery. If it makes you happier, than go for it.

But if I do get into some kind of freak accident......than I will.

my ex had her nose done. one of the more recent girls i dated also had her nose done. people don't think much of it, and they do it simply because it looks better. not even for the sake of career/dreams. i think i've gotten enough exposure that i don't think much about it. i don't like it when people use surgery to boost a self-esteem that never quite reaches satisfaction, but my ex's have been far from. they were pretty and used surgery as if it were their favorite necklace/earring. [except u cant really take your nose off!].

furthermore, i feel the lines get blurred when you work out and try to make your body look good. though the means are different, the ultimate end-goal is the same. vanity at its best? perhaps, but we all wanna look good. we wear nice clothes, we work out, we get our teeth whitened. plastic surgery is just another means that requires a bit more of a compromise on 'natural' beauty. but what really is the issue? that we modify our bodies, or the principle behind it? hmm.....

no matter how 'pretty' you can make yourself look, your child in the future will remind you of the original you. so please, try to love yourself the way you are, your children will learn from you.

sad to say that many cultures consider plastic surgery as a rite of passage for young girls at the age of 14.

It's weird because so many people are like, "Well, this is the film/music industry--they HAVE to be pretty." Yeah, right. Think of some of the most respected and well-renowned musicians and actors--not just the ones that are in the mega-blockbusters, but the ones that are actually known for their craft. So many of them don't look "perfect" or even handsome (like in Steve Buscemi's case) and they're still incredibly famous. The whole, "They HAVE to do it because they're famous" argument is such B.S. Tori Amos is a famous musician without plastic surgery. Bono is a famous singer without plastic surgery. Tom Hanks was incredibly successful without plastic surgery. So was Morgan Freeman. So was Jodie Foster.

Anyway, I don't support plastic surgery. I would find it difficult to really look down on those who get it, as well. Who am I to say that beauty shouldn't be democratic? It's just pure luck that some people are born with looks and others are not. I can't be the one to say, "You were born ugly--deal with it." However, I'm a hopeless idealist in that I wish people would just stop being so damn obsessed with it all. I know some girls that are less than average but still have boyfriends and tons of friends. They may be no Angelina Jolie, but they're not constantly whining about their noses or single-eyelids. Some people learn to deal with their less-beautiful appearances. Others wallow in it.

I personally have no problem with plastic surgery.

We all want to be happy. And we live in a superficial world. And this world we live in is not going to change. Beauty, and all that's associated with it, has been put on a pedestal since the beginning of modern civilization. Of course, the idea behind "beauty" is constantly changing, but it will always be around. And there will always be a social pressure to be beautiful.

Some people are satisfied with there natural selves. They are happy. And that's great!

But there are others who are constantly tormented by the reflection they see in the mirror. And for some of them, it cannot be eradicated simply by positive reinforcement or a change of perspective.

So I say, do what it takes to achieve happiness. Plastic surgery shouldn't define a person, after all, "it's the inside that counts," right? So why should it matter if someone changes their outwards appearance? Why should that be a reason to judge? None of us knows how that person felt, and if they are happier people in the end, shouldn't that be a good thing?

Anyway, people should just be happy. It's so easy to criticize when you are not the one hating the body they were born in.

i think there are more people in this world that look fine and think they're ugly than people who really look ugly and think the same thing.

I have mixed feelings about plastic surgery, but I'm always shocked at how common (practically required?) it is in in the korean entertainment industry. I was talking to my roomie a few days ago (shes korean) and I asked her if there are any celebrities in Korea that haven't had plastic surgery and she couldn't think of any. Apparently there was a singer who didn't get her eyes done for like 2 years, but then gave in and did it. Anyone know of any that haven't gotten anything done? (I'm sure there are many, but my roomie tells me a lot of stuff. How true it is, I don't know. Taeyang got his nose done? I don't know. But I guess there's speculation? sheesh..)
(excluding some models, cause a lot of the Korean models that have single eyelid were famous in America first then because popular in Korea because they were popular in America...)

On regular people it's a whole different story and people take it a lot of ways. One of the most surprising things was when my friend told me one of his friends' moms asked her daughter if she wanted to get eyelid surgery for her high school graduation present or something. sleep.gif;;
I can understand wanting to be prettier to some extent. I can totally understand if the person was in an accident or something, but its just so ridiculous hearing girls wanting it because a celebrity or something has it. And it can't be good... I've seen threads in soompi about girls wanting surgery to get taller or to make their legs thinner and its ridiculous...
