Putting The Time And Effort Into Decorating Your Own Home what's your primary motivation?

What's your primary motivation in taking the time to decorate your home? Is it so that when you get off work and return home, you have a nice place to chill and relax? Or is it a means of self-expression so that you can show off to your friends how cool your place is?
What if you don't really get many visitors to your place? Would you still take the time to decorate your home?

Is that enough though? Just personal satisfaction? Do you care if nobody even notices or is impressed with it?

But yea, in GENERAL, to echo what was said before, it's just about you feeling "happy" about your living environment. If you're a simple person, then maybe you don't need decorations. I just fill my bed stand with silly things like stuffed animals and dolls because that's what makes me happy. People may laugh at me (I know my parents do), but it's about the little things that I can do for myself to make things better when I wake up etc. I think it's also about giving yourself control to decide these things. There are so many things we can't control, but this is one of them --how I want to decorate my own room (if you're living alone that is...if you're still under your parents' roofs, then it's a no-no, which is why it brings greater appeal).

im the type of guy that likes fine dining not only because of food but also ambience. i drink wine out of wine glasses because it tastes wrong out of a cup. i drink beer out of glass, because it's wierd when drunk outta plastic. so when i come home, i wanna come home to a place that i feel good about. if i dont like how my couch looks, or don't like my coffee table, then the experience wont be as great as it could be.
it's like buying a luxury car because the drive is so much nicer when the ride is smooth, you have lots of oomph when you press the accelerator, climate control keeps you cool but not too cold, etc. you don't necessarily need it, but it's nice.

For me? I mean, I see my room more than anyone else, and I do it to just impress myself, which doesn't take much. I come home exhausted from the chaos at work and I see my bed.. It's so inviting.. Sometimes.. I like to think, "aww.. there's my bed.. look at it.. it won't yell at me.. it doesn't tell me to do this and that.. it just wants to be slept with."
I have dim lighting in my room for the most part and it just feels.. cozy to me.. Maybe I'll post a picture up.. I mean.. it's not the greatest of rooms, and it's not all that decorated, but to me, it's good enough. You don't always have to go all out when decorating your room.. Just enough to meet your tastes.

I agree. Just like I wear my clothes because I like them not because I think other people will like me wearing them, I would like my home aesthetically pleasing to my eye since the one that is going to be looking in my home the most is me and the one that I should be pleasing is myself. I also agree with what watcher said. Certain designs of the living space can relay different moods and feelings in you. Also it would apply to food as well.
Example: You see a peanut butter jelly sandwich that is squashed vs a peanut butter jelly sandwich that is not squashed. You would feel more compelled to eat the one that is not squashed simply because it is aesthetically more pleasing though both of them taste the same and still digest in your stomach into a blob and go out the other end.

oh man.. you ever roll a pb&j into a ball and then spread more pb around it? that looks 10x more appetizing than a regular pb&j... though some may beg to differ... but WOW... i love it! just a personal quirck i guess... haha

My visitors can give me their positive or negative feedbacks but it wouldn't phase me one bit.

doesn't necessarily require all three (time, money, and effort). if you don't have a lot of money, you can expend more time and effort (e.g., making your own furniture and decoration, coming up with appealing arrangements), or if you don't have a lot of time or energy, you can just spend more money (e.g., going to your favorite store and buying a matching set of furniture, hiring someone to decorate for you). i think the former option is often more interesting because it requires more creativity and energy to pull off.
i decorate primarily for myself because i wouldn't feel good in a place i didn't find pretty and comfortable. even in hotel rooms, i tend to start moving lamps and chairs around to suit my needs. i definitely appreciate when visitors compliment the decor and cleanliness, but their opinions don't affect the way i do things. for example, i have a print of a painting that everyone thinks is just weird, but i still really like it and keep it by the entrance. i figure anyone else will come around and start liking it eventually.
