I dont know if theres a topic like this in here, but if there is, tell me smile.gif

some of my famous literary/ historical examples for the SAT essay are:

To Kill a Mockingbird: prejudice
Martin Luther King: courage, sacrifice, doing something to fulfill a dream
Hitler: power, corruption
1984: danger of government control
Romeo & Juliet: power of love, love is a potential cause of violence
Lord of the Flies: civilization vs savagery, loss of innocence
American Revolution: overconfidence

Also, i was wondering if it was good to use Jmore modern books such as Jurassic Park?
Jurassic Park: technology is dangerous.

LOL. I end up making up a lot of my personal examples. I made up a book for my last SAT essay, "The Dark Side of Fame" and I guess they didn't catch it since I got an 11 haha! Anyhoo, I always end up using Martin Luther King for hero type questions.
I like your examples! I should come up with a list like you have made. (:
But I don't think they really care what kind of examples you use as long as you use them well so I think Jurassic Park would be fine.

I use personal experience most of the time. it's easy to make up and if you're good at arguing/persuading then you get your score easily smile.gif

omg SAT T___T i am SO not ready for tomorrow =X
anyways...oskar schindler has got to be one of the most versatile essay examples...especially good for topics about conformity

btw LitoYammy - thanks for the idea!! HAHA making up a book is pretty easy to get away w/...it's not like the grader will have enough time to check whether the book is real or not lol

You can essentially use anything for anything. The point of the essay is not really so much as to show off your knowledge of classic literature but more to show off how well you've mastered the English language and writing. I really think you can look at it as if it were an exercise in persuasion. Keep in mind that the people who are grading your essay are not necessarily Literature professors; they're mainly editors. They want to see good writing -- excellent content is just a bonus. If you can write a compelling essay about some cheesy chick flick you've watched, then go for it. You'll still get a good score.

it was like "do you think decisions that are made slowly and care over time are better than those which are not?" or something.

i used Lord of the flies by william golding and a example from my own life.

:]

if i had time, i probably would have used holocaust.

Is it bad to use personal experience from childhood?

"Truth is usually in singular - Lies always come in plural."

That's actually pronounced analgesic, not anal-gesic.

no its not bad to use personal experiences
but make that these expierinces are unique in a certain way and not some general experience that most people would have

i used The Godfather for my essay and got a 10
so any example is fine
if life gives you lemons, find the other guy who got vodka and make hard lemonade
