So now that you're 20+ on the verge of completing college or starting your new careers.. Where are you going from here? What did you want to do when you were younger? What are your new found aspirations? What are your goals? Dreams? What are you doing to accomplish those dreams/goals? Most importantly, are you generally pretty happy with where you are?

When I was little I always said I was going to blow stuff up for a living. I accomplished that and now it's time for me to aspire and do something else. Came back from taking a sabbatical to Europe (Italy, Spain, Sicily, Germany) to travel. Currently working two jobs, one for 2advanced.com, and one for lovebrigade.com.

I don't really know what it is I want to be.. So I'm kinda trying to decide. I figure if I ran by a couple of reader's posts I'll get a better idea.

Well, welcome to the pit.

I don't know what I want to do either. I've accomplished all of my goals. Now I'm just searching for other interests, but it seems that I don't like anything else. It's a horrible spot to be in. I could take up my dad's job and get paid $50/hour, which sounds awesome and I'm a great hands-on worker, but there's a problem. The job requires good eyesight. I have horrible eyesight.

You can probably just look at your catalogue of interests/hobbies and then start from there. What else did you want to do besides blowing things up?

i'm not sure, honestly. I'm looking towards either law or humanitarian work, I think. I would also consider other options.

Nah, it's not civil engineering. It's the poultry business that my dad runs, specifically determining the sex of turkey chicks.

That's fun! tongue.gif Sounds like a very interesting job.

I've begun working in my career industry for 3 years now, IT, since I graduated from university. When I was younger I wanted to make confectionary, tennis player, or become a model, of course I realised these weren't ideal careers and the latter of which required more work and support that I thought, so I opted for something in computers, an interest of mine, and somehow landed in an e-business degree.

My new found aspirations is to make a difference in the IT structure of my worpkplace, add to my qualifications and experience and of course, make some money. I actually have been mostly motivated by money ever since I started. My goal is to become the CIO of a company, be financially 'comfortable' by the time I'm 30 and only to retire when I've developed a disability. To achieve these goals I'm working my butt off, sorry, it cannot get more general than that. My dream is to own holiday homes in various major cities of the world and travel to the other countries that I've never been to.

Generally, I'm pretty damn happy where I am. I may be the youngest in the company, but the people here respect me and are wonderful to work with. We have a Wii and soon an Xbox 360 in the office, which are fun incentives, but of course they do not compare what they have at the Microsoft games rooms.

so many options... i think that's the wonderful part of being in your 20's. smile.gif

a few months ago, i decided i want to work at McKinsey in 5 years. Become a consultant, and afterwards, move onto upper management / CEO of a medium to large sized operation [whether my own company or someone else's]. my aim would be to be the next jack welch of corporate america.

so far, i have discussed plans to expand roles in my current company, which our CEO agreed to once our revenue is in the green. When that happens, i will be allowed to take on some business roles and not pure engineering. of course, in the meanwhile, i will still continue to sharpen my skills as a software engineer. if later on in life, i want to maintain my engineering path, it opens up the possibility to stay a tech and continue to move up the ladder that way. those skills may also open up other desirable opportunities elsewhere. plus, i sorta like doing this too.

i do photography as a side gig, but lately with my cooking hobby, im wondering if i should do a side gig in the restaurant business. once i get better at it, i think i might try my hand at it through a few friends who run operations in the food industry. i gotta say, having something else besides work comes in pretty handy. it gives you a new perspective, and who knows, maybe you'll like it enough to switch fields permanently smile.gif

that's where im at in life at the moment. i think as long as you're under 30 and not married, the possibilities are endless!!

Makes me want to become an astronaut. Tell me, what would you do if you met an alien?

I plan on working for the government in all areas biology related. Ecology, CDC, homeland security, FBI, etc wherever my GS level and years of work will bring me. I don't think I am the type to stick to a single job and work it for the rest of my life. Variation for me is necessary and I would assume the government has the highest flexibility along with stability than the private industry.

My goal is just to collect legoes + cliche goals of earn a decent living, enjoy my job, nice house, married, etc.

A small group of us in our company was invited for a games night at one of the Microsoft offices here in Sydney. Played Halo 3 on Xbox 360 on 4 projectors and 10 flatscreens. Our company against the Microsoft team.

They had a wide variety of other games available, one of my favs was FIFA.

I'm leaning towards dental school.
If not...grad school?
...I never thought of a backup.
I'm considering joining peacecorp or something too...

I can't see myself out in the actual working world for some reason =T

if you're really considering peace corps, apply one year before you graduate since the application process takes 6-12 months..

if i'd known that sooner, i would have had a chance to joing peace corps, but i missed my opportunity. :sighs:

Ironically, Randy Pausch is my idol now. Even way before I knew who he was and what his educational focus and passions were, I was so intrigued by how similar my goals are in comparison to what he has accomplished. Deep down, I've always want take some part Disney Imagineering or Interactive Studios (even if it's just an internship or something very small). I'm currently entering a competition for Imagineering and would just break down if I won. Similarly related, I was selected as a SIGGRAPH student volunteer for the past two years and had a chance to meet and talk to George Lucas. In addition, Carnegie Mellon's ETC program (which Pausch was a former faculty member before he passed away) is around the very top of graduate programs I have been considering for the past few years. I'm still very far in achieving my goals but at least I've gotten myself at some start, so I really have nowhere to go but forward.

Also, I want to Study Abroad...But I'm in a bit of credit card debt and I won't feel comfortable unless I pay that off. It's going to be hard for me to save up money if I want to graduate and then go abroad next summer. I know this doesn't really seem like a goal/aspiration, but it would mean a lot to me if I could accomplish this (both financially and for the experience). I've basically been stuck in the west coast of the US for my entire life, except for maybe one trip when I was 2 years old. I just want to feel the culture shock and see how I can adapt to another culture and country. I want to learn their customs, history, and other quirky little things. I was a former Anthropology major so the desire of wanting to learn about other people to learn more about myself is something that's really motivating me. And realistically I just don't see myself being able to do this unless I'm still an undergraduate student.

I'd love to 'travel around the world' while I'm young but that just seems so far fetched to me; hopefully my motivation to do so would be controlling my health as I age. That way I can travel with ease once I retire.

Basically I've thought about my future and what could/would happen if my dreams don't come true. I know what my backup options are and I'm quite prepared for them. But right now I refuse to settle and so I strive to get where I want to be.

I need to call my advisor and decide a major. I really dont know what I want to be. I guess I just dont want to regret anything.
I was thinking about becoming a teacher. But then I'm not sure if I am a good teacher.
Then I was thinking about majoring in Travel and Tourism. Hrmm...Maybe Internatiol Relations.

I don't want to become a doctor, or anything in the medical field. Yes, they make good money. But I'm sorry Grey's Anatomy ruined it for me.

Maybe I'll double major in Teaching and International Relations. And minor in Travel and Tourism.

In whatever amount of years in the future, I see myself in a third world country working at an orphanage.

Maybe I should major in child development.
