BD is not worth it if you're still in the boat that thinks DVDs look great, Blu's are too expensive and not worth it, or don't have a HD telly. Nor is it worth the money if the films you are looking for are not on Blu yet or you don't watch that many films in the first place.
I've got both a standalone and a ps3, I do no regret either purchase because I put both to good use on a daily basis. I cannot stand upconverted or SD media anymore, not to mention the lack of sound quality. I'm all for the experience that makes a movie that much better.

well, im on netflicks and don't own a single dvd. so that's a good start. do you know how much longer ps3's will be supported for bluray updates? i don't know how the update infrastructure works, but when sony phases out of video games, will the ps3 still receive the proper updates? [this could be negligible if they plan on supporting for at least the next several years].
also, what are the noticeable differences between bluray 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0? i could prob find a blu-ray player for under 300 if i wait it out a little bit. and for a whole lot less if i go on CL. if 1.x is good enough for the next couple years until they start building bluray players that can update via internet, then this might be a viable route too.

As long as the PS3 has life and they continue to pump out profile updates and patches (1.1 is standard, there's no reason to really go past 2.0 for a few years except for minor stuff that won't make or break a purchase). Granted this isn't like PC hardware where patches come out more frequently but updates are updates, if you can get online, your ps3 will grab the new firmware when it's needed.
Some movies will not run on older profile systems; iirc, movies released by Fox (The Simpsons, Sunshine, Live Free Die Hard) would not run on 1.0, neither did Rise of the Silver Surfer. I believe they release patches for the 1.0 systems, but you're SOL if neither a patch was released or the movie does not work. Mind you, 1.0 cannot be updated to 1.1 or 2.0, patches =/= firmware profiles.
Whatever you do, do not get a 1.0 player. You can also get your updates by burning a cd and popping it in the player, use a usb stick, or network it to your pc or via internet.

As for picture and audio quality, just use HDMI; if your home theater accepts HDMI, great. If it uses optical, you can run optical to your receiver for the audio, hdmi to your telly for the video.

If you're willing to spend at least 300 (which is probably the case since most standalones cost as much or more than a ps3 unless you go for some no name brand), just get a ps3.

And I'd also add that if you're in no particular rush, wait for a PS3 price cut- nobody expects one anytime soon though

im hoping a mix of the ailing economy and black friday will find me a good buy. no rush at all, just waiting till the right time. i could live with the upconvert for now, but i think that's because i've never had the in-home blu-ray experience yet. but im sure once i get it, it'll be great!!

I'm sure there will be plenty of deals on Blu-ray players come Black Friday, but personally I'd go with a PS3 since you can do a little gaming on it as well, and maybe use it as an occasional Linux machine.

Blu ray on regular tv (non HDTV) will be the same quality as regular dvds on non HDTV's.
I suggest getting the PS3 for its blu-ray and gaming capabilities and web surfing. Plus at least 47 inch wide screen HDTV will make your day. Don't worry about power consumptions.
