The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
Just finished it and I absolutely love it.
It's such a powerful and emotional book.
I couldn't put it down once I start because something is always happening.
When you think nothing more can happen, it does.
Here's a synopsis of the book:
The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan,
the son of his father's Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the
Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.
They made a movie out of this book too, but I suggest you read the book first then watch the movie.

Um, I'm a huge fan of MaryJanice Davidson "Undead" series. If you like Twilight, perhaps you would like this one. Although some part are more on the "adult" side as there are some sex in it.
Anyways, it's basically about a girl who died, then found out that she was the "queen" of all vampire. So it just takes her on this whole crazy ride.
And my favorite author of all time would be Meg Cabot so I would recommend pretty much any of her books. In case you don't know who she is, she wrote the popular "Princess Diary" series. My favorite of hers would be the "Mediator" series. It's about a girl who is able to see ghost, and each book is a different storyline. Very addicting. There's romance in here also. Oh, and definetly check out "Size 12 is not fat", I absolutely love the main character... very sassy and independent. It's kind of like a comedy book, but it involve some mystery and detective work. I loved it.
I got a lot more books to recommend (I loooooove to read), but I'll stop here because I don't want to overwhelm you.
And of course, you got the Harry Potter series, don't know if you've read it or not. But the books are a lot better than the films.

if you're into the entire otherworldly scene, definitely try the dresden files. it has the flatfoot private eye feel to it, and the main character is a detective who also happens to be a wizard and he figures out cases that deal with all sorts of creatures and people. it's a fantastic read, completely entertaining, and even though it's in a series, every single book is as good as the first. just make sure to read them in order.
