Hey guys, just wondering, are you taking a foreign language course because of your university requirement or as a major? What is it and why do you want to take it? Anyone aim to study abroad in the country of that language?
I'm just curious because I have to take 6 credits in a higher foreign language due to my school's graduation requirement. It's a toss up between French and Italian for me because they don't offer Japanese courses higher than the 200 level.

My university doesn't have any language requirement (not even any for English!), but I'm taking Spanish as a second major. Why? I don't know...because I like it, because I studied it in high school and want to stop losing it and improve instead, because it's good to know the second most commonly spoken language in my home country and in the area I live in particular, because I'm interested in Latin America...I took a year of Korean last year, too, again because I already knew some and wanted to improve in it and because I was just interested in it and seized the chance to actually take it. I have a really strong interest in languages in general. I'm fairly good at them. I would love to study abroad in South Korea or somewhere in Latin America or Spain, but that's not such an easy thing to do for science majors at my uni. Spanish is my other major, but really my Animal Physiology major is my first priority. Studying abroad for a semester or year would set me back in my more important major and I can't really afford even to study abroad for a summer, anyway.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

I'm a freshman and I'm currently taking Japanese 101 only because I like the language and I wanted to learn a new language. I don't plan to major in Japanese. I wanted to take Korean at first, but my school doesn't offer it. I'm sure learning a new language will be useful in the future. I would like to travel to Japan or Korea someday or maybe work for a Japanese or Korean company if there's a chance. I don't think I will study abroad though. My parents wouldn't want to be away for a semester or two o___o

Hello! I'm taking a foreign language to fill my University's requirement, but if I had the chance, I'd take as many languages as I could..I love them! I'm finished up my first year of Italian, and hoping to study abroad in Florence, Italy next year ^^ If there is time left in my schedule I will also take Korean!

I am taking French 2A. I am taking it cuz my counselor said that I need to, even though I told her that I took 4 years of French in high school. sleep.gif;; I am not a French major, rather a History major.

Btw, I am a transfer student, so it has been 2 years since I used my French and my French is really bad right now......^^;;

Currently an Italian major. I enjoyed it in high school and wanted to learn more about the language and culture. I'm also taking Spanish but I've taken French in the past (in college). Honestly speaking, I think Spanish is the easier Roman language to learn. French was hard for me to speak but ultimately, the grammatical structures are very similar.

cause of my major, I have to have 12 hours of foreign language. I met with the prof who brought my major (international business) to out school and he told me to take 12 hours of German and Mandarin. but I'm thinking of Arabic instead of Mandarin.

Well I'm a Japanese major so language courses are a given.
I'm currently studying abroad in Hiroshima for a year. It's pushing my grad date back a lot but i think it's worth it.

yes i do because of my major. Im taking asian studies and my major is Japanese. In the next few years i have to take other languages too. I'm thinking of taking Chinese next year and if i have more electives, maybe Korean in my final year. I haven't studied abroad before, but if i ever do, i would go to Taiwan.

I'm taking Japanese mostly because it's my major and because I find learning the language enjoyable. I'm hoping to take Chinese and Korean soon as well; I'd like my major to be East Asian Studies instead of just Japanese.

안녕하세요!!!!!

Yup, you guessed it, I'm taking first semester Korean this year and it is the BEST (except it's 5 times a week at 8:50am)!!!!
I'm only a freshman, but I'm leaning towards a degree in International Relations and Korean (except at the U of Wisconsin Madison the minor is: East Asian Studies with a focus in Korean), so I'm definitely studying abroad~ hopefully next year at the earliest!!

Oh, and I decided to major in this because I am really interested in the North and South Korea conflict...and Korea in general!

I'm also planning to take Hmong, which is my native language, next year. I speak Hmong at home, but I could use the class. ^^

It's a requirement for me. I'm taking Vietnamese though since I'm already a Vietnamese speaker. =p

preparing for japanese conversation test (which im dreading like mad) and the end of year exams now, and im really sad that i wont be able to take it anymore next year...

i'm an engineering student but i'm taking languages just for fun..
this semester i'm learning basic thai.. quite interesting because the language is so "soft" and.. as if u are singing!
i learned japanese for 2 years.. not so tough except for kanji coz i hate to memorize them.
i took arabic as well. daily conversation is ok but literature & writing.. difficult!
and if you're interested in south east asia... u can try lao, quite similar to thai.
or malay (either malaysia or indonesia.. grammar quite similar)
philippines also not difficult to learn

probably i'll take intermediate and advance thai.. and french too. it's nice to learn more languages and meet ppl all around the world, and u never know it might come in handy someday.. good luck!

I'm a Psychology major here in the Philippines. In our course, we have a foreign language subject. Not necessarily a major but we do have to get that subject or else we won't graduate. LOL. I chose Nipponggo coz I didn't know that they offered Korean too. T_T
but I'm happy with it. :] anyway I'll learn Korean through the net. Oh the wonders of technology. HAHA.

I took 4 quarters of French for my foreign language requirement. Than with elective credits I took 1 class of Chinese but, I didn't want to continue because the class I took the pacing was incredibly fast for me since it was an advanced class. So now I am taking Korean which I love because I am ahead of the class and I actually know what's going on.
