Ok, so I just got home from an Oktoberfest party at my uni and I had a shower. I felt phlegm in my throat so I spat it out. It was a mini blood clot! I could taste blood in my mouth after that. More of these blood clots came out afterwards and some blood. Now my throat feels very sore.

Is it worth going to a doctor or does this normally happen?

I only had 2 drinks btw.

Thanks in advanced!!!

No, that's not something that usually happens. It worries me that there are blood clots coming out of your throat because these blood clots may be coming from your lungs; if they are, then you need to get to the emergency room ASAP because you could either have a serious lung disease or the blood clots may deprive your body of oxygen, leading to sudden death. You need to call 911 right now. It could also be coming from your stomach, in which case, you may have an ulcer. All of these situations are very serious. Do not ignore or belittle them.

You shouldn't even be sitting here typing on a computer to ask us about something like this. This is very serious, and it is definitely NOT normal. There are several reasons as to why this is happening, but NONE of them are good. Go to the hospital immediately if you can, or at least go to a doctor as soon as possible.

Omg...you should go to the hospital. My grandpa kinda have a similar situation. He coughed out blood and thought nothing of it. Then when he finally went to get checked, he was diagnosed with cancer and some other problem. That was a few years later when he got a full body checkup and was too late to do chemotherapy. The other problem was the water in his system; it was drying up rapidly. So you should go or else its too late to prevent it. It could be something minor though. I just hope its nothing. Good luck.

Half percent of blood coming out from the mouth part are very serious. It's definitely not a good thing in any glance. Stuff like these makes me shiver badly. Hurry up and go see the doctor, your getting me on my nerves. ;-;

Did you drink?

Sometimes after you drink too much, your body doesn't realize that you're dehydrated
so you don't drink any water
and then you start spitting out blood.

Something similar happened to me once, but I know for sure it was because I had too much to drink and didn't drink any water or whatever afterwards
But I stopped after... a day or so? Like I didnt want to go the doctors because yeah.

Maybe you want to check with the doctors though
It might be a problem that's more serious than alcohol
because you said you only has 1 or 2 drinks?

Let me ask you this question:

Was the blood fresh, where you could still taste it? Are you having any difficult (any whatsoever) breathing?

If not, then yes you probably have some scarring of the tissue that lines the respiratory tract. If yes, then its probably not and something that could have been bleeding in your mouth. I would suspect its nothing serious, but if you're that worried see a doctor (ie. go to the emergency room). For all I know you could be having hemothorax...
which is a very serious issue.

Its just like when you have blood in your stools. If you can see the red fresh blood streaks, then you have hemorriods, but if its black and dark colored, then you have internal gastric bleeding.

i like the topic starter. o_o
coughing out blood is a terrible thing, but its great you took care of it so quickly without even putting "OMG!" on your post.

You seem kinda optimistic. I wish I was like that too T_T

ok sorry for the off topic-ness. But yeah, I heard thats rather serious. I hope you get treated and feel better soon.

Hey, I just got back recently =]

First I wanted to say thank you so much for everyone's concern! I appreciate it =]

I went to the emergency room straight away, I felt so sorry for my mum, I asked her to go home to sleep but she didn't want to. This was 3am in the morning by the way. There was only one doctor that night and the wait was going to be 6 hours, so after 2 hours, we went home. Yeah, a little stupid but the local doctor will be open by the time we got our turn.

Ah Reum: I basically had no water until after the party (7 hours later), so that could have been why
kelvin6: Yeh, I actually did taste fresh blood ><" I told the doctor about this and I mentioned I've been getting shortness of breath lately too.
YellowBun: I remember everything ;p

I got a chest x-ray, (got to wear them cool tie up dress things, i wanted to keep it =[), the results came out fine so I guess I'm okay. My throat and breathing still feels a bit sore but the doctor said, if it gets more serious, then come back. now I guess I'll just have to wait and see haha

you probably had a small nosebleed and ended sniffing in the blood and swallowing a bit/a blood clot.
your throat probably caught it and you ended up coughing it out

it happened to me a lot when I was a kid; just a couple days ago, too, actually. lol

but I'm sure it wasn't too bad. maybe from excessive yelling at the party? straining your throat?
there could have been a lot of reasons for that bit of blood.

glad you went to the doctor to check though. (:
