Ok so I just joined this new softball team and I really like all of the girls on the team and the coaches are pretty cool and everything...
but the one thing I noticed is that all of the coaches smoke!!! (and a majority of the parents as well)
Like, in between games and before, after, and even sometimes during practices the coaches smoke cigarettes and the occasional cigar either out by their cars, on the sidelines, or even sometimes like 10 feet away from us...
Don't they know that smoking is really bad for them? and for all of us softball players on the team??
Or is it really not that dangerous to be smoking at our games and practices?
Last practice I was thinking about this...because from where I was standing I could smell the cigarette smoke...
Is it considered second-hand smoking if you can smell the smoke? or do you have to be like right next to the person smoking for that to happen?

I'm sorry for all of the questions...but I would really like to hear what you guys think about this or if you know any facts about smoking that would be relevant to my situation. Thnx so much!! happy.gif

**edit** this is not a thread to bash smoking/smokers nor am i trying to bash anyone by posting this topic...i am sorry if there was any confusion ><"

that's a bit... sad, in my opinion
and yea, if you can smell the smoke, it means you're breathing it, and thats called passive smoking
passive smoking can be just as dangerous as smoking in general, people get lung cancer, cardio and heart diseases from passive smoking (second hand smoking)

if you can't stand it and think its unhealthy for yourself, you should talk to your coach about it and maybe sort something out from there, because if it was me, i would not tolerate breathing in smoke everytime there's training
the coaches and parents shouldn't exactly be smoking in the presence of kids either, its all a bit controversial for me, because i'm against smokers/-ing

=)

I don't think ironic's the right word.

I'm against smokers/-ing too. They shouldn't do it. They risk causing harm to the players and they're damaging themselves.
MATHMATICIOUS.

maybe i will work up the courage to go talk to my coaches one day
i don't want to get on their bad side either because i'm really learning a lot from them-more than i have from any other softball coach

Okay this isn't an anti-Smoking thread. There is no need to turn this into an I hate smokers thread.

To answer your question, ask your Coach to go somewhere else and smoke away from you. If you are smelling it, it is second hand smoking. There is no reason to be intimidated. Smokers aren't evil people.. Just tell him.

Where are your softball games/practices held at? If this is at some public park, school, or any other public facility, I'm sure there are rules that prohibits smoking....

sad.gif

I'm sure you're not the only one who is uncomfortable with it. Talk to your team mates and some of the parents as well.

I smoke but even I know that I shouldn't be doing it in front of others unless they are okay with it. I always ask if I can smoke around people (even if I already know that they are smokers themselves and would most likely be cool with it).

Just because I decided to help myself give cancer doesn't mean I need to give it to others, hahaha.

Ahaha, it's so funny, during Gym, when we're doing usual 30 minute jog every week.
There was this girl in my class last year, that always say I regret smoking at moments like this.

I was kicked out of the soccer team although I never smoked during practice or games. The coach just knew that I smoked and said that I was a bad influence on the younger girls...

WHOAH. Coaches aren't supposed to be smoking in the first place. They're breaking major rules and by smoking during practice, they're being terrible influences on the players. Even if they're talented or cool, they should not do that at all. Try talking to them but if all fails, talk to the principle or another teacher about it.

i did not mean for you to think i was bashing smoking/smokers in any way...i am sorry if you took it that way ><""
i was just concerned about my coaches smoking so close to athletes during practices and games...

lolz...dang...the smoking + the running must have been hard on her lungs :/
that's another thing-all of my coaches used to or still do play baseball/softball or are active in some way...

yaa...i kno i need to talk to them...i just don't kno exaclty how to start off the conversation..."hey coach-smooking is bad for you and causes cancer so don't do it k?"...lolz don't know how well that would go over tongue.gif

omgg and the other day at practice, when my coach was done smoking his cigarette, he just threw it into the grass, but the thing is there's a huuuuggggeee fire going on right now a couple of cities away from us and so one of the girls on my team ran over to the cigarette and stomped on it saying "coach!! that's how fires get started!"
this is kinda off-topic from my original question...but shouldn't my coach at least throw away his cigarette in the trash can?
ah..well they have not stopped smoking around us, nor have the let up during practices and games...
wat are your opinions?
anyone have any good suggestions for how i can start off a conversation with my coach about smoking at our games and practices?
any advice will help! thnx!! happy.gif

I'm a smoker who runs everyday for workout. I think people are beginning to realize that smoking should be done in discretion towards others who do not like it. When I was in Japan, it was super frowned upon to just, smoke in random places on the streets because ppl behind you could smell it. THey had smokers corners EVERYWHERE, designated areas. Honestly, running helps me cut down on smoking, I've been doing well with it actually.

You should just say something to your coach like, " coach you stink~ eww go do that over there!" Make them run laps with you and when they can't keep up, make fun of them, "ahaha it's cuz you smoke! you SMOKER!"

Oh, and if you can't get your coach to stop smoking, you can at least get him not to smoke while he is 'coach.' I dont think that's too much to ask- a coach is someone you look up to, who helps you train and guides you. He should not be smoking in front of his prodigies!
Quote of the year :
"Asians are fuking pussys. Im ashamed to be a part of you weak timid little race ...Maybe if asians were as awesome as me we wouldnt have so many racist things hurled at our people. If you didnt think like such a timid little slave maybe you wouldnt get racism 5 or 6 times a week like you say you do. " -CuriosityGguy I think like a timid little slave. That's why I put this on my signature.
