Normally, they average about 30-40k but after you get your cpa it boosts your earning capacity to about 50-100k+

I am from Van...going to SFU with a concentration in Accounting. I work at a mid size firm...national 6, but not the big 4 so you have an idea who I work for.
Anyway in Van, in audit, you're looking at around 38-40k start at national 6 and probably mid size as well. Once you get your CA, you'll be a senior and you're probably looking at 50-65k. Manager you're probably at 75-90k, and 100-130k as a senior manager. Partner is around 300k base salary, plus profit sharing and whatever business you bring in i think. You should be making around at least a 100k with 10 years of experience.
I'm guessing you didn't go through the CA recruit this fall? Accounting in Vancouver and abroad is very competitive because everyone wants to become a CA these days. My advice is keep your grades up (3.2 CGPA at least) and have lots of extra curriculars where you're in leadership roles. This will give you a solid opportunity to get a job in accounting, or in any other area if you decide to change.

Hey Dan, what kind of extracurriculars are the firms looking for? I want to become a CA as well.

Honestly it could be anything as long as you're in a leadership role. Few examples might be an exec for a campus club (doesn't have to be accounting related), running some kind of charity event (or having significant responsibility), coaching soccer. Regular volunteering is fine, and they look at that as well but the extra-curriculars that have the biggest impact are ones where you're in a leadership role.
It doesn't have to be accounting related, so find something you're interested in and volunteer.
Essentially what firms are trying to do is to see if you have leadership skills, teamwork skills, time management skills. Once you become a senior you're going to be training the new hires so you need to be able to manage teams. Extra-curriculars are a good way to demonstrate these types of skills because not many people have relevant work experience (and firms don't expect it from you).
