Well... I think you should wait until junior year. Unless you have already taken subjects up to pre-calc and chemistry? If you already have taken those subjects or studied them by yourself at home, then by all means go for it.

I haven't taken ACT yet so I'm not sure how vigorous it is. It's supposedly a little bit less stressful since there's no penalty for guessing the wrong answers.

act math is harder than sat math b/c it goes up to trig
act science doesn't require any background knowledge; you just need to know how to interpret graphs, think analytically, etc
act reading is alright, similar to cr but maybe easier?
act english is different, but it's not too bad but i prefer sat writing over act eng
and essay is similar, too, but you have 30 min.

you only have 4 sections and 1 essay section whereas for sat you have 10 sections to complete.
pacing is really important.

math 60 questions in 60 min
sci 40 in 35 min
reading 40 in 35 min
eng 75 in 45 min

hope that helped.

I got a 25 without studying or anything extra. Don't wait to take anything senior year. Don't try to take some one year, wait after summer, then take another test. Gosh. Biggest mistake ever. I didn't improve anything on my SAT I (practically the same exact score).

i don't think it matters...just stop taking it once u think it won't increase anymore
recommended is 3x
i took it 3x w/o writing
then i realized i needed a w/ writing one, so i took it the 4th time
and then now i realized i need 1 more pt for this one scholarship cuz on my 4th time i changed my answer and lost the pt. so i'll be taking it for the 5th time..(2nd time w/ writing *sigh*)

The ACT isn't all that bad~ It's a lot less intimidating than the SAT I think.

The math mainly consists of algebra II (if I remember correctly) and geometry. There's like.. three calc and/or trig problems or something. And there's some pre-algebra, too.

The science gives you experiments you need to analyze (which I hate! Especially the biology ones D:<)

Reading part... eh, I suggest you become REALLY good at skimming. Haha, I'm so bad at it--I took forever on one selection~! T_T;

The English has to be the easiest part ever. :D It's basic grammar skills~ But some questions can be tricky, as in them giving you five choices and you have to pick which clause sounds best instead of the one in the selection OR if it sounds alright as is. Sometimes you may think one answer choice sounds good, but sometimes the structure of that clause throws everything off. Just gotta read it carefully. :]

Anyway, as for how many times you can take it, you can take it as many times as you want and whenever you want. All your scores stay with you on your account. You create an account on the http://actstudent.org website and it keeps all your information. Even the stuff you enter into the application stays on there when you apply a second time.

I was told by my older friends that you should take it as many times as you possibly can. I took the ACT the first time my sophomore year and made a 20, which is average (to me at least. I'm not up to par with those who score like 25's their first time).

I took it twice my junior year (fyi, I'm a senior now) and my score went up to a 22 (both times). Statistically, your score SHOULD improve the second time you take it. The third and so forth, I've been told it kinda stays the same? But don't let that discourage you~ o:

I think you should take it a little later in the year. (: I think October is a little too early to take the ACT.. and December.. I think that'd be a better time to take it. But since you haven't yet, I'd suggest you taking it in the spring. ^^;

You pick what score you wanna send to the college you wanna go to. So if you take it your first time and make a 22 and the second you make a 24 and the third you make a 10 (teehee, you get this by like only writing your name hahaha!), you can pick the highest (the 24) to send off. There's a small fee for you to pay when sending your score, btw.

Anyways, good luck with it whenever you decide to take itt(:

.edit
Ah, make sure the school you wanna go to prefers the SAT or ACT~ I know this is common sense, but I just wanted to put that out there LOL. But I think a lot of schools are in more favor of ACT over SAT.. >__>; I dunno heh.
