EDIT: Nevermind. I've done volunteer work in a local hospital, care home and charity shop. I've been at the charity shop for around a year now, but I need to find more volunteer stuff like that to do.
Pros for all of them are that is a good thing to do, you'll have a sense of accomplishment and also its getting added to my CV .
Cons: All of them especially the charity shop and care home take a lot of time and that would have to be taken into consideration. For example I have school monday to friday so I can't work then, the shop is closed on a sunday so I go help out saturday morning from 8am-10am. Which means I have to get up at 7am. When I could still be sleeping, so yeah it takes dedication too.
All the staff are always lovely but, thats not garunteed for customers/patients/people in general as you do get a few idiots every so often which is really part and parcel of all work to be honest, so its not a con exclusive to volunteer work.

Obvious if I were to fall off the roof or something that would suck but oo well. I'm much more comfortable on roofs now

There's probably a lot of local events that are going on in your place and def. need some volunteers. So look them up (they're usually the ones who give away free stuff).
And for the things that add more value... go volunteer at a seniors home.. it's not as bad as you think. I love it there.. I like to see the seniors every week

The first time I volunteered for something outside of my school was this year for an anime convention - and the people there were so so nice <3 and I made some new friends too (:

here we have to volunteer for at least 40 hours in order to graduate, so I guess we HAVE to.
but anyway, I volunteered at this election campaign, and it was really fun.
all you basically have to do is some paper work, and they had a lot of coffee and donuts there XDD
but yeah, you should really go if you have the time, it's really fun x)!
cuz you meet a lot of new people, and a lot of them have these really funny stories to tell =p=p

I've done a lot of odd volunteer things when I first started out my freshman year. (I'm a senior now, whoo hoo!)
You could volunteer at local animal shelters, the hospital, your old elementary school, the library, temple (if you're Buddhist, haha), or Church.
Or try to stick with a club that engages in community service projects on a normal basis.
The only con to volunteering I can think of is the fact that you have to give up a lot of time, depending on what you do.
But the pro's totally outweigh the cons.
Volunteering is not only rewarding to those you do it for, but also for yourself and your community.

some were fun and everything...and others were just not-so-fun and tiring.
I have tutor little elementary kids, recently working in the library,
and I have plant trees for a new park and pick up trash at several different places.
