I see the majority of soompi members already have it all planned out when it comes to researching and applying to their dream school and with a complete list of backup schools just in case. A few of you even admit it is life for you and some have already visited their prospective choice. With that in mind, I want to ask you all how you went about deciding which university is the best for you. What kind of research did you do? What deciding factors were there? Did you talk with anyone? And, so forth.
If you want to know, my situation is a bit different. I pretty much slacked off in high school and had horrible grades (still do). I would go as far as say I never did anything remotely to what you guys have done. Now, I'm currently a sophomore at a community college and would be transfering the following year in 2007. Wanting to avoid a repeat of my senior year in hs, I welcome the advice you guys can give me.

Well, I'm just going to name some of the obvious; take tours of universities you are considering in enrolling, does it pertain to your major or not, talk to a guidance counselor, take note on how they handle financial aide, location and lifestyle(travelling and rooming etc..), and tuition of course.
I'm sure someone can elaborate a little bit more...

So if you're still slacking off and have horrible grades, perhaps the best you can do is transfer to one of the easier public universities or transfer to another CC.
Why do you want to transfer?
Factors to recognize
1. Location
2. Size
3. Price
4. Social enviroment
5. Academics
6. Alumni (are there any famous alumni, do a lot of people become successful due to graduating that particular school)
And most importantly, do they have the major you want to major in!!

i started planning early in my junior year so that by summer i had everything carefully planned out and could start looking at financial aid packets and yeah..the important stuff
but umm, basically you can use collegeboard and also visit the schools sites. think about public/private and state residency first because if your dream school ends up being USC you better be able to pay for that...(which i can't...) haha and i hope you don't plan to do nothing but study hardcore 24/7 for the entire year. so yeah you really got to look to see if you'd actually have fun there. clubs? the scene? what to do? what city is it near? did i forget to mention look to see if it has your major
?! hahahaha yeah you'll get the hang of it when you start researching. oh princetonreview.com also has lots of lists like best college for 'blah blah blah' worst college for 'blah blah'
