I'm not gonna go into detail but bluntly PS3 has slight better graphics than xBox360 but when it comes to which one is the better console it has to be 360. The 360's online play is waaaaay better than PS3's attempt. 360 seems to have more variety of game's with it and if you want, you can buy a 360 with HD space you can use with your computer, very very useful. But of course 360's tend to heat up and eventually lead to hardware failure or more known as RROD but Microsoft claims they've fixed this problem but Id still pay that extra 50-60$ at the best buy counter for a warranty -.- I learned the hard way
But I would also recommend a Nintendo Wii, these things are amazing especially with a group of friends

PS3 has a blueray dvd player. and is more expensive. If he seems like the type that watches blue ray dvds, then I would get a PS3... if not then I would get an XBOX 360

it depends on wut he likes. i have a 360 and a ps3 and imo i like the ps3 better because i already had to get my 360 fixed twice and online play is about the same. 360 u have to pay 20 bucks a year while ps3 it is free but if ur on a budget buy the 360 because it is cheaper.

Humorous take on consoles:
If you have "real" friends: Buy a Wii
If you have online friends: Buy an XBox 360
If you have no friends: Buy a PS3
XBox 360: Good for online play [FPS, etc.], more games
PS3: Nicer graphics, smaller selection of "good" games
From what I've seen, XBox 360 games are a little less expensive (like $2-3). Although, unfortunately, some of their consoles are not exactly quality productions (ever hear of the Red Ring of Death?)
I'm pretty sure that currently the cheapest version of the PS3 is twice as much as the cheapest version of the XBox 360 (unless you're shrewd and buy online), although that's because of the inclusion of the Blu-Ray player.
As for wondering what comes out of the box and prices: XBox 360 & PS3 [Check out the charts of the different ways they're packaged]
Also: Check out some of the console-exclusive games and decide. For instance, I've constantly been tempted to buy a PS3 for littlebigplanet alone.

^Well they've more or less "solved" the problem with the Ring of Death by replacing consoles.
On the price point, the 360 is definitely the less expensive option and a much larger game library right now. In terms of games for both systems they are generally the same at $60 if it's a new release. Plus with both systems brand new the PS3 ($399, 80gig) is TWICE as much as a 360 ($199, arcade). Also not to sound too mean but unless your bf's gift to you can match the price of a PS3 then I wouldn't buy it.
