So this has already happened two times since I got my new computer (sony vaio), but i will be using iTunes one day, and then put my computer to sleep, and the next time I open up iTunes, the entire library is empty.

Can anyone help me to explain what's happening?

I also have that. It means that you're library file (.xml) is corrupted or damaged. I always export my library to .xml file. (is beneath import...)
If you're library is empty again. Just import the .xml file and you're library is here.. xD
