Well I guess there will always be sick people.
But if you really look at the hours worked salary ratio, doctors don't get paid that much.

Good paying jobs that have high security? It's the same as its always been:
lawyers, accountants, surgeons, engineers, architects
I'm talking about jobs that a reasonably large number of people can have a realistic shot at being able to get into - the number of world-class football or basketball players is limited by a whole lot of factors, most of which are beyond the contorl of any given person (not just native ability, but limits on number of teams and players per team, salary caps for some sports, etc.).
You could throw politician into the list - incumbents have enormously high re-election rates (even in this "year of change", 96% of the races involving incumbents saw the incumbent win - that's damn good job security!). But while their salaries are decent (six figures), they actually aren't nearly as good as any of the professions listed above. But there are a lot of perks to be a senator which aren't included as salary, so it's hard to judge the full dollar value of the job. Plus the power and influence...

There's always a need for more doctors and nurses.

i do believe that nurses with specializations can sometimes make more money than doctors in hospitals.
yes, doctors attend school for forever and work a lot, but nurses... not so much?

^ yeah specially if your RN and you have other degrees like emergency nurse.
my aunt is working for kaiser for 10 years now? and the starting salary for RN&emergency nurse is $50 an hour.
it gets higher as you have more experience.
