The story of Jamal Malik (Patel), an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out..

I want to see this movie but there are no theaters around here that are showing it. T-T The plot sounds really interesting. Dev Patel is hilarious on Skins. His character in Slumdog Millionaire is totally different from Anwar. He said in this interview that he got hired because the director's daughter was a fan of Skins and recommended him. (:

He pretty much answered that on David Letterman.

I just saw this movie earlier this evening.
Outstanding narrative tale and a beautifully shot motion picture.
Part of the reasons I enjoy watching foreign films is because of the exposure to the customs, the sights, the overall "feel" of what life can be like in settings so far displaced from my own. Although much of the setting is set in the slums of India, I think Danny Boyle did a good job of capturing - either through vibrant colors or picturesque landscapes - the kind of beauty that you'd think only one that lives in these environments could only find. I thought it blended well with the sort of rags-to-riches/against-all-odds theme throughout the film.

Interestingly, the main trio of characters in the movie were each played by a trio of young actors - one portraying their specific character throughout each stage of their lives - from children, to young adolescents, to young adults. It's amazing how all nine of these actors played their roles well across these 3 main lead characters. I can't recall a film where this was so effectively pulled off on such a compelling narrative tale. Maybe it's a first? I don't know. (For me, the actress that played the older Latika (Freida Pinto) was so beautiful. The way she gazed at Jamal at the train station was mesmerizing. Man, I would just melt if a girl ever looked at me the same way Latika smiled at Jamal. blush.gif .... but I digress. )

Anyway, Slumdog Millionaire is a nice slice of cinematic entertainment and one of the few movies this year that personally made me feel inspired (and I watch a lot of movies). If you're one of those kinds of movie-goers that absolutely won't go to the movies unless you think the story was well worth your time and money, I would say that this movie is one of them. You'll come out of the theater feeling uplifted as well as feeling as though you've lived a lifetime - albeit vicariously through the experiences of the young characters.

You won't be disappointed.

Here's a YouTube clip to the movie trailer: Slumdog Millionaire

Our hips said it all..

I really want to see this. Seems so interesting. Unfortunately it's on limited release.
Anwar from Skins is on it and it feels so weird watching him all serious and different.

I really want to watch this movie -- the only movie I'm interested to see in theaters since the Dark Knight way back when that came out.

HERMIT -- I've watched several snippets from the movie on youtube so I know what you're talking about. I really like that shot of Latika starring up at Jamal in the train station too. I'm sure it'll be much better in context, and I'm kind of sad that I probably ruined that (and possibly some other) part(s) of the movie for myself by looking up all these clips on youtube.

Nice pictures there, Sydney.
That second to the last picture with the three kids is such a bittersweet photo to see.
Hopefully, without overtly spoiling the movie, let me just hint that the photo of the three main characters in their youth only reminded me of the struggles, the tragedy, and the triumphs that would later unfold for them.
These young actors played their roles well. They were innocent and pure. It amazes how despite their living conditions - whether impoverished or rich - kids will always be kids.

To those who've posted, I hope you do find a way to be able to see the movie in your respective areas!

i finally wised up and saw the movie a couple of days ago. amazing. one reviewer summed it up best when he admitted that, yes, the story is a tad unrealistic and contrived, but isn't that why we go to the movies in the first place? it taps into that one-in-a-billion situation beautifully and heartbreakingly that i was so so so happy at the end. and india is so vividly, so exotically captured in all its mundane splendor that i have to give kudos to danny boyle. i was pleasantly tickled by the appropriate bollywood references like amitabh bachchan (even as a little girl growing up thousands of miles away from india, i knew about him) and the dance sequence at the end. not to mention dev patel, who didn't really do anything for me in skins, is absolutely enchanting in his performance that i couldn't help but fall in love with him.

it's a heartwarming, crowd-pleasing indie, and unfortunately people have tried to pigeonhole it and say that it's the next "little miss sunshine" or "juno". i disagree. it's very different and not just because it's set in india. if anything, i find it more in the same vein as "once". do i think it's a best-picture winner? not quite. that doesn't disqualify it from being a great movie, though.

Just watched it Tuesday and it lived up to my expectations. Albeit a bit cheesy and yes, unrealistic, but that is the whole point of going to the movies: an escape from reality. It was heartwarming, emotional, inspirational and quite frankly, one of the year's best films. I hope it'll continue its successful streak, and win the awards it deserves.

oh gosh i just watched it...very inspirational story. The story is a little unbelievable due to the amount of luck Jamal experienced; they call it destiny =) one of the best movies i've watched, i'd recommend it to anyone

This seems like such a good movie. I love the storyline. I just hate select screenings, because who's really going to show an independent film in my town? No one, I tell ya.
