When you speak with international students, do you screw your English up on purpose just so they can understand easier or do you speak with them fluently?

My little sister brought some int'l students over to our place to do hw and it was so hard to talk to them...
So I just used broken English and Japanese with them >,< but in the end of the night, i figured it didn't do them any good since they came here to study English in the first place...... mellow.gif

I think it's actually scientifically proven that people with broken English respond better to other people with broken English. That said, since they're here to learn English, speaking it properly would be most beneficial for them. But if you really want to get a point across, go for broken English.

I only use broken English In some cases where they don't understand other than that I just speak fluent English. because It won't help them learn and understand more If you go easy on them? if you get what i mean.

I'm guilty of it, haha.
I got to an international school and most Korean students here don't speak English all that well, so when I talk to them I kinda use broken English haha;; most of the time on impulse too.

OMG. yeah, i tend to talk slower when i'm speaking to them especially if they can't comprehend well.
But i don't talk to them in broken english cause that will eventually lead them to not speaking english
properly. sweatingbullets.gif
Well, it doesn't really mean that i talk slower like, slower as in.. in a retarted kind of way. biggrin.gif
But i have to like, pronounce the words well cause i'm a fast speaker. xD and i also use
some hand gestures. rofl, i don't know why though. XDD

i'd throw myself to the sea

when i saw you, i fell in love,
and you smiled because you knew.

you don't have to use "broken english" with them...whatever that is...

just speak slower, speak clearly and use simplier words.
that's it!

watch their faces to see if understand what you're saying or not. if it seems like they don't get what you're saying, use different words or a different way to explain it.

also, don't use lots of slang or fillers like "like"/"you know"/etc...

Lol. I sometimes use broken English as it's easier for them to understand my English. If I use proper, they would look at me like 'what the hell is she going on about' lol.

I just speak slowly. You don't need to 'dumben' your English at all, all you need is patience. If they don't understand a word, take time to explain it. And then move on with your discussion. I would find this the best way for someone to 'learn' English.

Seeing as most of my friends are international students from non-English speaking nations, I believe my method has pretty good founding wink.gif

not really broken english..
but just a simplified and rephrased version of my usual sentences
i tend to speak slower and choose simpler words
thankfully, everyone of them seemed to have understood my thoughts perfectly

I do =x
There's a lot of international students in my school, I try not to use broken English, just simple words most of the time.
Sometime when I have to bring the Japanese students around town, I'll use broken or simpler English just to save time and trouble.

Nah, I speak with them fluently. It's just awkward for me to "dumb" myself down.

Didn't bother doing anything with my english. After all, it won't do any good if they are pampered with broken english. But the best way around it is to use the standard english, not the conversational ones. After all, Non-english speakers learn english at school, and English language is taught in its standard format, not conversational ones...

I've had international friends since H.S I was the president
of the international club, my boyfriend's an International student at an English institute.

I tend to find, that I speak a little slower than everyone else in Massachusetts,
and it could be because a good chunk of my friends are International students.

Also, I want to be an English conversation teacher in Korea =)

I think it's totally WRONG to speak in broken English to them, they're here to
learn English, ... not to be hanging around speaking their native language, +
being spoken to like they're 5 years old. Granted if they find others of their own race,
they tend to speak to them in that language (ahem my boyfriend dry.gif roommates, schoolmates,
everyone's Korean ... but his English is good, so oh well .. but some of his friends, .. need help.) but
they need to speak English. I mean, sometimes I ask for Korean help too!
But the main point is total immersion in a native/natural English environment.

I actually get really angry at people who speak to them in this manner, because you're
not helping the situation AT ALL. I feel people who speak in broken English to them
really don't understand International students and are doing more harm than good.

I also get annoyed with people talking to the Japanese exchange students about Anime,
... please don't waste their time, most Japanese don't even like Anime ... but that's another
story. (++ Yes, I know because I was an "exchange student" of sorts in Japan for 5 weeks when
I visited my friend --- I was with the locals, not 1 liked Anime).

사랑 Love ...

I think its rude to speak to someone in broken english just because they can't speak english too well, as if you are looking down at them.

I usually just speak slower, my vocabulary is easy enough that everyone can understand LOL
one more chance ...

No, I just speak normally and if I have to I'll re-explain it in a different way. No need to dumb it down.

Sometimes I'll find myself like.. copying the way they say something though without noticing.
I can't help it, but I do that with ANYONE I hang around with a lot.. talk more similar to them than others.

I speak in the same manner as I would to any other english speaker, native or not...no point in dumbing down your vocabulary or grammar, it just seems patronising/condescending on your part. I do however, speak a tad bit slower so they can have time to catch everything i am saying, especially considering most people already think I talk way too fast to understand on a regular basis lol :]
