Does anyone know what this program is? Or has anyone been to one of the conferences? Do you have to be nominated or is it that you get nominated by your grades?

It it a ripoff program or anything? My parents are seriously considering letting me go on a trip, but I want to have some sort of first hand knowledge about the program.

If I were you, and I were shopping for some summer programs (I'm guessing that's what it is), I'd go for a program at a college.

Brown, Columbia, Cornell and a lot of schools have these kinds of programs.

The 'Lead America' thing seems a bit fishy, and if it costs 2k-4k+, I'd invest in something that's actually known.

Just my two cents.

good luck!

I got one in the mail. Look at the people they listed and check online to se what they do to see if they're credible. Senators are listed so I guess its not unsafe.

I heard these things are a waste of money.

If anything, try the summer programs at universities.
Brown, Columbia, and I think Cornell offer them (among others).

yeah, my problem is that the programs at the colleges/universities take up like 1-2 months and i'm already going to korea for 2 weeks of my summer and that's in the middle of those programs

i don't know, i've gotten so much mail from those things without even wanting it. i'd rather study over the summer again at a university, maybe this time U.Chicago or Brown.

i know people from my school have gone to those before, though.

I've been to one of these through-the-mail conferences. To tell you the truth, you really only get to meet some friends and sit through a lot of long and boring lectures. You might get to do some experience work like a speech or something, but ultimately you're not going to get anything beneficial for college.

In fact, colleges would rather see you do the work yourself and not have it cut out for you by the people who organize conferences. Look for an internship around your area or maybe apply part-time at a hospital. I would save the conferences last, maybe around in senior year. smile.gif
