I'm thinking of getting one for Christmas but I'm not sure if it's big enough for my room. I was wondering if anyone here had one and their experience and how big they are? Thanks in advanced!

I never owned one but I had to sleep in one for a period of time and my back hurt like crazy.

The one that we have is about the size of a twin sized bed when folded out.

hmm well i have a bed and a futon in my room... but i choose to sleep on the futon since its bigger. i'd say its about a queen sized bet and i keep it folded out.

I love my futon. Never had any problems with it what so ever. I would recommend one actually.

I sleep on my futon more than my bed. My futon was expensive though and I bought the most expensive one with extra thick mattress. It is now almost 10 years old and it is still the most comfortable mattress I have ever had. I really recommend a futon--a good one, don't buy cheap ones because they are worthless and bad for your back. The best part is that you can fold it up in the morning so you have lots of room in the house.

Generally those things are not good for your posture or restful sleep. I would avoid it and get a real mattress. I have a futon for overnight guests only.

I currently sleep on a futon and it does sometimes get uncomfortable. But I like it better than my bed cuz its on the floor and easy to move. I usually fall asleep faster if I have a pillow resting on top of my stomach, kinda weird but it works.

an american futon or a real japanese futon?

if you're talking about a real japanese one, i'd say forget it.
they are really uncomfortable. i can't wait until tuesday when i can sleep on a (kind of) real bed...for 2 nights...

also, since you're on the floor, it gets pretty cold in the winter...

I would advise getting a memory foam topper or a regular foam topper. That's what I had on mines and maybe the reason why I never complained =D

I have a futon.
But if I had it all to do over again, I'd probably just get a long coffee table.
Those are much more comfortable to sleep on.

futons aren't bad if you're using it for a couch. if you're using it as a bed, you must like back problems. actually, ikea makes a pull out couch that just uses a futon mattress. my boyfriend used to sleep on it before we started dating, and he liked it. Because the cushion pulls out directly on the floor, it's a little better than the normal futons with the bars. Also, the ikea one pulls out to the size of a full mattres and is only about 160 USD.

^That's the same one I have if you're talking about the black one where the back cushion is used as the pillow.
That's good for short term but I think the foam would form uneven soft/firm spots if you use it everyday.

We have a futon in our study room. I forgot where my boyfriend got it from, but it's pretty expensive. I take more naps on that futon than in my own bed. It's really comfy. laugh.gif

I have a heat vent under my couch, so at night when I lay on it, all the heat has gathered in the couch and the cushions emit warmth. It's the best place to nap ever.

Ugh, I hate futons, I had one growing up and it was horrible.
My brother had brought his old one up to our house and used it in his old room and it was HORRIBLE.
We ended up putting a full mattress on top, that helped a lot, but it was still pretty bad on my back.

The higher end futons are supposed to be really good, but eh~ I don't know...
The only good thing about a futon is the space you get when it's folded!!

I got one, doubles as a couch. Pretty comfy, it's a queen, buy a good futon mattress.

I used to have one with a special mattress with spring coils inside and everything. It might've been more comfy than my real bed.
