I'm doing my English ISU on the theme of self sacrifice.
It's because i want one of my books to be TWILIGHT.
haha.
But what are some other books with the theme of self-sacrifice?
Classic or contemporary.
Doesn't matter.
thx!

^The Bible is too filled with little (and not-so-little) stories that you can't have a single theme for it. Well, except for 'God's love for mankind' but then that'd become preachy to others that may not believe. :x
Twilight sucks, IMO, especially in showcasing the theme of self-sacrifice. For one thing I never felt that Edward sacrificed much to be with Bella, especially since he was 'weaned' from human blood.
Les Misérables has something about self-sacrifice. Sort of. Jean Valjean was pretty self-sacrificing. (I can't mention any specific instances because I haven't read the book in ages - but he saved Marius even though he was against his and Cosette's love, and he didn't kill Javert when he had the chance - but maybe Jean Valjean was just being noble, I don't know.)
And then there's um...wait. I don't know anymore. XD Sorry.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.
One of the characters in the book gets into a car crash and doctors tell him he'll have seizures for the rest of his life. He decides to sacrifice his relationship with a close friend so she can go pursue her dreams instead of having to take care of him for the rest of her life.
A girl, who's diagnosed with leukemia persuades her sister to file a lawsuit against her parents so her sister wouldn't have to be a donor for her anymore. Of course she would die without a donor, but she wanted her sister to be free.

The Giver is an excellent example. It may seem a little childish but I believe it represents the true essence of sacerficing oneself for the community.

Harry Potter series:
-Harry's parents, his mother especially, gave their own lives up to save Harry. When Harry's mother was given the chance to live, she gave up her own life and put a protective spell on Harry so he would not die.
-Harry himself was willing to give up his own life in order to have Voldemort defeated for good.
Ummm...there are more but I can't think of any right now.
