NEW YORK TIMES: DAKOTA FANNING IS 15 GOING ON 30

Dakota Fanning is so self-possessed and so articulate that the only reminder you’re speaking with a 15-year-old and not someone much older is her occasional tendency to giggle when she’s sharing some droll aspect of her life.

Such a life. With the camera running, Fanning has been kidnapped, beaten, covered with live snakes, sexually assaulted and menaced by beings human and not. Under a less constant gaze (though there are always cameras), Fanning attends a rigorous private school in Los Angeles, is a cheerleader and wears a pair of Marni platforms ‘‘every single day.’’ We know this because there are photos to prove it; even though the subject is an unnervingly articulate film actress, she is also a teenage girl pleased to exercise the prerogative that states that for a period in one’s life, a particular pair of shoes — or a bag or a boy, for that matter — can be perfect in every respect and should be worn (or phoned) every day.

She doesn’t concern herself with privacy in the traditional sense, figuring that exposure comes with the territory. What she guards is that part of her life that is unseeable. ‘‘You have to be able to separate your personal life from playing a character. . . . That’s not your real life.’’ Good thing; next up for her is ‘‘New Moon,’’ the second film in the ‘‘Twilight’’ series, in which Fanning takes a fangs-first plunge into the darkness as Jane, a very nasty vampire who functions as a kind of vampire enforcer. She didn’t bother trying to find some redeeming characteristic in Jane, she says. ‘‘She’s pretty much evil,’’ Fanning says with a laugh. ‘‘Yes, she may feel like she’s just doing her job by torturing people, but that’s evil.’’

‘NEW MOON’ TRAILER: WHAT’S MISSING? AND ARE FANS NOW TEAM JACOB?

The Cliff Dive — Kristen Stewart told us long ago that Bella’s pivotal cinematic near-suicide will be CGI, and we’ve got to admit: We’re still a bit concerned. Fan-made videos like this one give us an idea of some things to expect from what could be the most powerful moment in “New Moon,” but so far, nothing official. Come on, Chris Weitz — cough it up!

Fight Scenes — Although Catherine Hardwicke’s “Twilight” won the hearts of millions of women, it won’t be stealing men away from sports and “Star Trek” sequels anytime soon. Now, with male directors in place for the next two films — and increasingly darker, more action-oriented plotlines to come — it’s time to start convincing the dudes that seeing “New Moon” will do more than put you in your lady’s good graces. But what have we glimpsed so far? Shirtless Jacob, shirt-open Edward, shirtless wolf pack. “Fight Club” gave the same number of abs, but also brought along just as many punches to the face — so bring back the honey and chicken, already!

The Vanishing Volturi — As any good Twilighter knows, the Volturi feature prominently not only in “New Moon,” but also in the overall arc of the “Twilight” saga. So, why have they become the J.D. Salinger of the film series? We want full-on, official shots of Aro, Caius, Marcus and the rest. No more slowing down video clips to see if that’s Michael Sheen in the background — it’s time to bring out the big guns.

Quil Be Seeing You — Everybody’s got their own favorite quasi-obscure “Twilight” character, and mine is Jacob’s “wingman” Quil Ateara. We know he’s played by Tyson Houseman in the film, but we haven’t seen so much as a publicity shot yet. Sure, some might laugh — but I’ll be wearing a “Team Quil” shirt when I see the film on opening night. Which reminds me of a second complaint: Why has no one invented “Team Quil” T-shirts yet?

It Ain’t Easy Being Human— They’re the nicest people in the world and the backbone of the “Twilight” film series: Mike Welch, Christian Serratos, Justin Chon, Anna Kendrick, Billy Burke and others. But although these fan favorites are among the most visible at “Twilight” conventions and other events, we haven’t seen so much as a glimpse of them in the “New Moon” trailers. It’s bad enough that these guys don’t get to pretend they have superhuman powers, the ability to live forever or even a clue as to all the craziness going on in Forks. “Twilight” is nothing without the humanity that Stephenie Meyer injected into it — here’s hoping that Weitz remembers that element as he’s working all those long hours and late nights in the “New Moon” editing bay.

EDIT: MTV: ‘NEW MOON’ BRINGS WOLF PACK TOGETHER TO ….EAT MUFFINS?

“I call it ‘the muffin scene,’ ” revealed Gordon, who plays Jacob Black’s friend Embry Call in the flick. “We all gather around at Emily’s house — she’s Sam, the big pack leader’s, fiancée — and we all just gather around and eat muffins and talk about stuff.”

As those who have read the Stephenie Meyer novels know, this inserted scene is rife with dramatic and humorous possibilities. At some point in the saga, Sam Uley imprints on Emily — the second cousin of high school sweetheart Leah Clearwater — leaving Leah more than a tad bitter. The scene takes place on the La Push reservation, with many of the key Quileute characters interacting while they partake in their bountiful breakfast. But why muffins?

“We like muffins,” Gordon said, revealing that the Quileute wolves have a taste for more than vampire flesh.

“The muffin scene?” Taylor Lautner grinned when we told him of Gordon’s comments. “I didn’t have the pleasure to enjoy any muffins.

“When they were eating their funny little muffins, I was standing in the back, all pissed off,” Lautner said of the scene, which depicts Jacob as not being too thrilled with the whole imprinting/ turning-into-a-wolf drama. “So I just got to watch them eat their muffins.”

According to the buff, 17-year-old star, Jacob will spend much of “New Moon” in a mood that not even a tasty pastry could cure. “He’s a little upset. He’s pissed off a lot in this movie, for many different reasons,” Lautner explained. “Maybe because he just transformed into a werewolf. But he’s a little grumpy at that moment. So I just watched them eat their muffins.”

An intense Taylor? The news might be shocking for those die-hard fans who have come to know and love the actor as a happy-go-lucky guy. But according to Lautner, he can put on his game face when he needs to.

“Oh,” he promised with a wicked grin, “I can turn it on and off.”

'New Moon' Stars Kristin Stewart, Taylor Lautner Discuss Killer Breakups

MTV: Kristen, in your opinion, how is the relationship between Bella and Jacob in "New Moon" different than the one between Edward and Bella in "Twilight"?

Kristen Stewart: It's such a different relationship; it's like entirely original.

MTV: It seems much more playful.

Stewart: Yeah, exactly. They're light; they actually have fun with each other. Edward and Bella are always so strange, you know?

Taylor Lautner: It's always so tense.

Stewart: And only he can bring her out of that rut. Like, she literally is going to die; she's going to stop eating and be done. And the only thing that brings her out of it is this lightness [Jacob] brings.

MTV: What is one of the main things you're eager for us to see when "New Moon" hits theaters in November?

Lautner: I think the biggest thing you learn is that I disappear for a while, and she starts going through a separate depression. You go into a depression — would you call it that? — when I leave.

Stewart: Oh my God, yeah.

Lautner: Then she comes back to discover that I'm a werewolf, so that's the big boom. Yeah, I get to transform into a werewolf a couple times, which is awesome.

MTV: What was the stunt work like in those scenes?

Lautner: Well, Jacob's thing is he actually can transform in midair. So I got to do these really cool stunts where I got to actually run and then they'd hook me up on wires and I'd jump up in the air and then I'd come to a jolting stop and have to hang there for a bit. That's what you saw in the trailer, actually. That was a lot of fun. I get to do a lot of cool stunts in this one.

Stewart: That cute, little, fuzzy wolf.

MTV: He is very huggable. Tell us about one scene that you read either in Stephenie Meyer's book or in Melissa Rosenberg's screenplay that you were like, "Man, that's going to be tough to pull off," and tell us how you were able to figure it out.

Stewart: "New Moon" is riddled with all of that. I think it's the one book in the series that I was intimidated by — in a good way. That's the best feeling to start a movie with. But probably, my favorite line in the book is when I have to say to [Jacob], "It's him; it's always been him!" Like, I have to say that. Yeah, it killed me, it killed me.

MTV: It was a tough day to shoot?

Stewart: Yeah, and just like everything in our movie, it's such a heightened version of reality. It's like, people don't just break up [in the "Twilight" films] — they break up and it literally kills you. It's not like you just say, "Oh, I'm really depressed and crying." Everything is supposed to be a fantasy version of that. So I always had a really hard time figuring out, "Am I doing enough? Do I look like I'm going to die?"

MTV: Yeah, it would be tough to be the most dramatic person in the world, but without being cheesy. And Taylor?

Lautner: ["New Moon"] is very complicated. There's a lot of heartbreak, there's a lot of things going on. Edward leaves at the beginning, she goes into this depression, I come to try and bring her out of it. Then I go through my own issues, and then she leaves me. It's all over the place, and there's a lot going on, and there's many of those scenes that you described.

MTV: Which was your favorite to shoot?

Lautner: My favorite one was — well, we call it the breakup scene — but it's the scene right after she sees me shirtless and I've cut off my hair, all different for the first time. I have to tell her that we can't be friends anymore.

Stewart: He attempts to break up with me — but it doesn't work out.

MTV: EDI GATHEGI TALKS ABOUT ‘NEW MOON’

Gathegi confirmed that he’s seen a cut of “New Moon” and said it follows Stephenie Meyer’s novel closely. “That’s the whole point of having Stephenie Meyer as a consultant for all the books, because you know she has final approval and final say and they’re not going to do anything to upset the fan base,” he told the audience. “You guys are the driving force behind this entire thing.”

The 30-year-old spent about three weeks on the “New Moon” set and was met with a few happy changes from the first film. For one, the cloudy red contact lenses used to give the vampires their signature scarlet stares were replaced with sleeker models more closely resembling regular contacts. For another, Gathegi finally got to wear shoes. “God bless Chris Weitz,” he said. “In “Twilight’ we didn’t have shoes, because in the book they don’t have shoes — you know, nomadic vampires don’t have shoes. And I was cold, I was froze to death! But Chris was like, ‘Well, wear shoes.’ ”

When asked whether his character’s penultimate showdown was more of a fight or a chase, Gathegi remained mostly mum, but did concede that it was hard acting with something that wasn’t there. “We basically acted with a man holding a piece of cardboard shaped like a cow. So when you see the movie, look at my eyes and [decide], is he seeing a cow or is he seeing a wolf?”

Though that scene will be Gathegi’s last as vampire Laurent, he said he can’t be too upset about not returning to the saga. “Honestly, perspective. I’m happy I’m in ‘Twilight.’ I’m happy I made it to ‘New Moon.’ Things could be worse.”

He did admit one regret: never getting to sparkle in the sun.
