"Develop the mind of equilibrium. You will always be getting praise and blame, but do not let either affect the poise of the mind: follow the calmness, the absence of pride." - one of my favorite Buddhist quotes; I know it's a hard task to look up to, nearly impossible to achieve, but I try to avoid letting exterior emotional events and happenings affect who I am and the way I work. If people are going to talk smack behind me, then they can go for it; I won't let it compromise who I am.
It's not nice, and I tend to dis-associate myself from people who talk behind others' backs in negative ways (I see it as OK to discuss friends and people when they aren't around, just with other friends... but talking smack is a different sort of deal).
