For those of you who first moved out, alone, or with a friend/roommate/S.O./etc., tell me, what were the little things that you completely forgot about? What was something you did not expect, or just never crossed your mind before the actual moving?

I mean, those of you who actually moved out and had to provide for yourself for basically everything, not simply moving into a dorm with your parents sending you money. Or heck, maybe you did move into a dorm, but your parents didn't help at all. You get my point. Simply, almost no help from parents. How was difficult was it? Or was it not difficult at all?

The thing that really, really stuck out was the fact that after I moved all my stuff.....my new apt was SERIOUSLY lacking furniture and furnishing. It was so empty!!! You don't realize all the extra added costs there are to having your own place. Getting something fixed when it's broken is also a big pain and a lot of things, you just don't know what to do because your parents took care of it when you lived with them. Remembering to pay rent was also a big issue, haha. At the end of the day, though, it was well worth the 6 years I lived on my own.
Quote of the year :
"Asians are fuking pussys. Im ashamed to be a part of you weak timid little race ...Maybe if asians were as awesome as me we wouldnt have so many racist things hurled at our people. If you didnt think like such a timid little slave maybe you wouldnt get racism 5 or 6 times a week like you say you do. " -CuriosityGguy I think like a timid little slave. That's why I put this on my signature.

The most important thing I overlooked was pots and pans, utensils and a microwave. Seriously, all I had was noodles at first and nothing to cook it in. Paper plates and plactic forks goes a long way. Eating out was rare cause I was on a tight budget then. Oh yea, and paying your bills on time too.

When I went out on my own, I was living with my aunt. We had this huge fight and I just packed up and left. I wasn't even in contact with my parents. It was really tough for me the first year. But, I worked hard and kept my chin up and everything just seemed to fall into place on its own.

When my friend moved into his new place, he called me up and asked me to bring him rolls of toilet paper the next time I'd go and visit him. I thought this highly odd because I thought that kind of stuff was already provided for in the prison system.

I consider myself a minimalist since I don't care or need very much. I'm living in an apartment with a roommate who I call fancy all the time, and if it weren't for her, the apartment would be bare (she had her own place last year so she brought everything with her, I didn't force her into it!). I don't do anything when I'm home other than sleep, cook/eat, read, interbutt, so I wouldn't miss anything if I were lacking things such as furniture and things like that. I live on a loan and I never ask my parents for money because they haven't got much to give. I don't like wasting money because I am "cheap," (I consider being smart). I know I haven't got money, so I don't spend more than I should be spending. So all is good for me and always will be biggrin.gif

You and I both. I don't rely on anything, and have very little. And I enjoy being as cheap as possible.

Cheap sounds bad... how about cost efficient?

I like using "economical." Both are fine though. We don't NEED shiz because we don't live extremely shallow lives devoid of any real meaning. We don't define ourselves by what we own!

I only have but fast food to thank for shaping me into what I've become today. And that's one hell of a shape, I tell ya.

the sink gets full of dishes within 2 or 3 days and that they don't disappear. and also like others said the extra cost of furniture cause my apartment was practically bare all i had was a papason and a bed. utensils is always something that i forget..but hey the less utensils and dishes the less you have to wash smile.gif

It was VERY difficult for me since I was working part-time and going to school at the same time. My paycheck barely covered the rent and since I don't know how to cool, I had to do takeouts all the time.

I ended up moving back with my parents 6 months later.

Maybe I'll try again after I get my university degree. sweatingbullets.gif

havent moved out yet, but im somewhat prepared
some furniture, untencils. i already do my own laundry and wash dishes. and i can cook fo rmyself, not including instant ramen.
the thing is most of my life i didnt live with my mom, but she just bought a house and so i had to move in with her to help pay for the house, sooo does that mean i've moved out? i pay 'rent' [700]. the house is sorta mine as well since im in the deed or w/e.

i never thot about the dish rack =/, i needs ones of those.

Its hella different from dorm life.

Some of the things I have realized living away from home:

1. Cable bill is $30
2. In my apt, I only have to pay electric bill, but everything is electric.
3. Roomates are annoying. Mine doesn't do his dishes, he brings over girls and makes animal noises from his room, the walls are too thin, furniture costs A LOT, doing laundry is more expensive. College was $.75 cents a load and another $.75 for dry. @ my apt, its $1.25 for 1 wash or 1 dry.
4. My apartment has only 1 parking spot, I want 2 cars.
5. My roomate has 2 cars.
6. No matter how far I live, my parents wants me to come down on weekends.
7. I have to do my own dishes, sometimes my roomates.
8. I have to take out the trash in the flippn cold.
9. I save a lot less than I think.
