http://www.ccleaner.com/
clean out the junk files.

Then defragment.

Hopefully you can get some speed.

Also use hijackthis to go through the programs that startup. Tere are many things you can remove from startup without issue. Google what you dont recognize.

u got windows XP?

try downloadin a program called "BOOTVIS" to help increase ur boot up time, it wes create by microsoft so dat ur comptuer would boot up in 30 secs etc etc.

also look at ur taskbar, on the bottom right, u should have no more than 6 icons dere because it takes alot of resources from ur comptuer.

go to start>run> type in MSCONFIG > and click the start up tab,

uncheck those that you dont really need such as real player or winamp or quicktime etc. u can still use those programs by doing dis, jes that the icons will no longer be on tha bottom right.

also important reminder, ONLY UNCHECK those u reconize, nuttin else, hope dis helps

That's how long it takes for my AMD 850 MHZ computer to bootup. Bought a video card to reduce the demands on the CPU, added an external modem, limited the number of programs that are required at bootup and it won't bootup any quicker.

I'm switching to an Athlon 64 3000+ because it's cheaper to upgrade now and I'm tired of waiting on the computer to finish one task before I can enter another command. smile.gif

^ Put in a WD Raptor 74gb and install windows to that drive in your next computer and be very happy. Alternatively, the 400-500gb Maxline drives are also quite fast and I think if you put something like that together you will be fairly pleased with your 20 second startups...
My 40 second bootups irk me and I want to get a raptor or a 500gb drive to help with that speed.

i defragmented my computer last night before i went to sleep...

but start up still lags.

i'm hoping that bootvis will speed it up...

All of what that site tells you to do is done automatically by CCleaner, so don't worry. Great program.

Also, a word of warning about Bootvis. If you have an AMD processor, it might cause your comp to hang when you do a Startup Trace. I know that happened to me a few times. Interestingly enough, the Optimize option still works, so I recommend running it.

Side note, how much memory do you have and what size HD?

In terms of computer power im soo spoiled... some guys spend tons of cash on their cars... my computer gets the money my car remains stock.

Okay, so you are running windows xp. That puts your computer in the range of about 0-6 years old.
You have cleaned, defragmented, and otherwise done everything you could to optimize it... whats left?

Dachink's question of SATA or IDE points to his curosity to the drives running in UDMA or PIO modes.
Open the device manager... Start-> Run: devmgmt.msc
Go to the IDE thing double click Primary IDE channel, should get this screen... if it says PIO mode thats your problem.

I like hardware much better than software, so visit http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php and download SpeedFan.
Run speedfan and go to the fourth tab and check out the hdd health. A failing drive will also slwo down.

Eh, I doubt it has anything to do with the harddrive.

Badly fragmented hard drive or almost no swap file space will will slow the computer down big time.

Thanks for the CNET.COM link. Did most of that before but It only shaved off 10 seconds on my bootup.

Time to change the CPU and motherboard. biggrin.gif

Just check it occasionaly... if you see it drop thats a BAD BAD THING!!!
I had the thing go to zero. My drive still kinda works, but I occasionaly loose files and stuff lol.

Actually, my new Segate 300gb drive is at 50% right now... Might have gotten a dud drive but ti works okay so that might be your case. Im keeping an eye on mine and if it drops 1% im taking it back. But for you, just think of it as an indicator that it might be seeing some corruption and random sectors with bad data stuff like that.

Sounds like a good plan. I would say Segates for their 5 year warranty. But Maxtor's Maxline 10 series and Western Digital drives are faster. I am refering to the 300gb+ drives with 16mb cache. (Im using a segate 300gb 16mb cache right now)

I have an AMD64 3000+(2GHZ cpu speed) installed to replace an old tired AMD 850MHZ. Boot up time is under 30 seconds compared to 3 minutes on my old reliable AMD 850MHZ.

Awdark is right when he mentioned that a faster hard drive will decrease boot up time. A SATA 10,000 rpm hard disk would really shorten bootup time.

Clean out unnecessary programs out of your startup file might shave a few seconds off. tongue.gif
